NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 18/1/96 A very sparse, moist and stable snowpack. Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 19/1/96 Some light snow showers on moderate SW winds may result in localised accumulations of windslab high on NE facing gully heads. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche wherever windslab build up is greatest. The remainder of the snowpack is expected to remain stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Sparse snow cover in gullies above 950m. Thawing at all levels on Thursday. ICING: Gully routes about the only option at present. All other routes poor at present. COMMENT: Somewhat more wintry conditions imminent? LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 18/1/96 The remaining snow deposits are stable and thawing at most levels. The freezing level has been at the summit of Ben Nevis, where a frozen crust exists. The avalanche hazard remains Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 19/1/96 Colder temperatures overnight and tomorrow will further consolidate the remaining snow. A light dusting of snow is expected, Which will have little effect on the existing avalanche hazard. The avalanche hazard will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy snow cover, restricted to gullies above 1000m. ICING: Snowpack expected to freeze overnight. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 18/1/96 The continuing thaw has removed much of the snow cover which is now mainly patches above 800m on NW to N corrie headwalls and in summit gullies The remaining snowpack is generally soft and moist Where deeper deposits of snow remain the avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 19/1/96 Colder conditions with light falls of new snow will form localised shallow pockets of windslab on slopes of an easterly aspect and in sheltered gullies and hollows above 800m. These deposits are not expected to be great. Avalanche hazard Moderate (Category 2) where new snow forms on older snow. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow above 800m in isolated areas ICING: Very little ice remaining small patches above 900m COMMENT: Colder conditions on Friday, there is hope yet ! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
