NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 19/1/96 Dry, slightly cooler conditions have brought about a stable (and now very sparse) snowpack. Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 20/1/96 Cold, dry conditions will re-freeze an already stable snowpack. Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A few patches below 1000m; reasonable above this altitude. ICING: Much better neve likely in popular gullies with onset of colder temps. Good ice will take a little longer to develop - though frozen turf likely to improve on a few routes. COMMENT: Climbing conditions expected to remain generally poor. Most buttress and mixed routes stripped bare by sustained thaw and are now very 'technical'. Easier gully routes will see most trade. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 20/1/96 Colder conditions will make the snowpack more firm and bring fresh snow to ground above 600m.Shallow windslab will form over patches of old snow in summit gullies and corrie headwalls facing N to NW.In these areas the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patches of wet snow above 800m. ICING: Isolated patches of ice above 900m.
