LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 27/1/96 A thin dusting of snow still exists through out the area. Significant snow accumulations are generally restricted to areas of old frozen snow. Small localised areas of hard slab are also present in some sheltered areas. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 28/1/96 The cold conditions are expected to continue overnight and tomorrow with no significant snowfall expected. This will have little effect on the existing snowpack. Areas of old frozen snow and small localised areas of hard slab will still be present. The avalanche hazard will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light dusting of snow above 600m. ICING: Ice will continue to form at all levels. COMMENT: Ice-axe and crampons essential for all hill users. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 27/1/96 A very sparse snow cover exists above 450m the general snowpack is very thin and stable. However the strong E/NE winds have deposited very localised areas of shallow windslab in sheltered hollows and SW to NW facing slopes. Where windslab overlies old snow ice (neve) in summit gullies and corrie headwalls the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 28/1/96 Light snow showers with strong SE winds will continue to scour the existing snow cover. Isolated pockets of windslab will continue to form in sheltered areas such as summit gullies, corrie headwalls. Where deeper deposits of windslab overlie the old patchy snow ice the avalanche hazard will remain Moderate (Category 2). These accumulations will be very localised CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light snow cover above 300m ICING: Ice on paths and rocks above 300m COMMENT: Climbing conditions are improving with ice forming on the water courses higher ridges and buttresses are frosted and should give some sport. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 27/1/96 A very sparse snow cover exists above 450m the general snowpack is very thin and stable.
