NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 29/1/96 Some consolidation of recent windslab accumulations, which lie primarily on W through to NW slopes and in sheltered areas of some N facing gullies. Avalanche hazard Moderate (Category 2) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 30/1/96 Further light snow flurries with light E winds will maintain the current Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche on W through to N facing slopes and gullies. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A light cover exists at all levels but snowpack remains sparse. ICING: Firm conditions in many gullies. Buttresses are still thin. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 29/1/96 A light dusting of snow exists above 600m. There is generally insufficient accumulation to present any significant avalanche hazard. However some small localised areas of windslab exist, but these are restricted to NW aspects, and other sheltered hollows, above 1000m. Where this snow exists, the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 30/1/96 The cold E airflow is expected to continue overnight and on Tuesday, with no significant new snowfall. This will have little effect on the existing snow stability. Small localised areas of windslab will still be present on W and NW aspects and other sheltered locations. Where this slab exists, the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere, the snowpack will be stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Dusting of snow above 600m. ICING: Ice forming at all levels. COMMENT: Many watercourse routes have come into condition. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 29/1/96 A thin and sparse snow cover which is generally stable exists above 300m however isolated areas of windslab are present on slopes with a W to N aspect and in sheltered summit gullies. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2) where deeper accumulations of windslab have formed or old snow underlies AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 30/1/96 A strong easterly airstream with dry cold conditions will bring no significant change to the condition of the snowpack with isolated areas of windslab on W to N slopes and sheltered summit gullies. Where deeper acumulations have formed or old snow ice underlies the avalanche hazard will remain Moderate (Category 2) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light general snow cover above 300m ICING: Ice on rocks and paths above 300m COMMENT: Climbing conditions are generally limited to areas where ice has formed in watercourses and to higher ridges and buttresses which are frosted. These areas will give some good sport. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
