NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 30/1/96 The snowpack continues to consolidate with the present weather conditions. However there are still localised areas of unstable slab on W through to NW slopes and in sheltered areas of N facing gullies. Avalanche hazard Moderate (Category 2) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 31/1/96 Little change in snowpack conditions, the Avalanche hazard remaining Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A light cover exists at all levels. ICING: Firm conditions in many gullies, buttresses are still thin. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 30/1/96 Significant snow accumulations are restricted to areas of old frozen snow and small areas of hard windslab. These accumulations are generally in gully beds and other hollows above 800m. The hard windslab is further restricted to W and NW aspects. Where the slab exists, the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere the snowpack is stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 31/1/96 The cold settled weather is expected to continue overnight and on Wednesday. This will have little effect on the existing snowpack. Any unstable snow will tend to be in localised deposits, restricted to gully beds and other sheltered locations, on W and NW aspects. Where this snow exists, the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere the snowpack will be stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light dusting of snow above 600m. Heavy riming at higher altitudes. ICING: Ice continuing to form at all levels. COMMENT: Many watercourse routes have come into condition. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 30/1/96 A thin covering of snow exists over 300m.Isolated areas of windslab are present on W to N facing slopes and in sheltered summit gullies.Where windslab overlies old snow ice the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 31/1/96 As the dry cold conditions continue there will be little change in the existing snow.W to N facing slopes will hold pockets of windslab.Where deeper windslab overlies snow ice in summit gullies and corrie headwalls the avalanche hazard will remain Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A light covering of snow exists above 300m. ICING: Ice on paths and rock above 300m.
