NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 1/2/96 Areas of windslab still exist on W through to N facing slopes and gullies, these are in the main fairly well bonded. The general snowpack is hard and stable and the avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 2/2/96 A few light snow flurries are possible over the period which may result in some small isolated areas of windslab on W through to N facing slopes and gullies. The avalanche hazard is expected to remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A light dusting on a very sparse snowpack. More rime than snow on plateau areas. ICING: Ice conditions still mediocre. COMMENT: Firm conditions with easy gully lines in fair condition. Most buttress routes remain fairly thin. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 1/2/96 Significant snow accumulations are restricted to areas of old frozen snow and small areas of hard windslab. These accumulations are generally in gully beds and other hollows above 800m. The hard windslab is further restricted to W and NW aspects. Where the slab exists, the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere the snowpack is stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 2/2/96 The cold settled weather is expected to continue overnight and on Friday, with only very light snow flurries. This will have little effect on the existing snowpack. Any unstable snow will tend to be in localised deposits, restricted to gully beds and other sheltered locations, on W and NW aspects. Where this snow exists, the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere the snowpack will be stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light dusting of snow above 600m. ICING: Ice freezing above 200m. COMMENT: Several routes on the West face of Aonach Mor have received recent ascents, as have Comb Gully and Garadh Gully on the Ben. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 1/2/96 A thin covering of snow exists above 300m.Isolated pockets of windslab are present on W to N facing slopes and in sheltered summit gullies.Where windslab overlies snow ice the avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 2/2/96 The cold settled conditions will continue with no great change occuring in the existing snow.On W to N facing corrie headwalls and summit gullies pockets of windslab will remain.Where snow ice underlies windslab the avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION:A light covering of snow above 300m. ICING: Ice forming at all levels. COMMENT: Low level ice climbs receiving attention such as;No.6 Gully,The Screen,Chaos Chimney,Avalanche Gully,The Bubble,Great Gully.Ascents of snowed up rock routes in Coire nan Lochan etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
