NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 4/2/96 A sparse and in the main stable snowpack prevails. However with strengthening winds and shifting snow throughout the day small localised accumulations of windslab have been developing on some N and NE facing slopes and gullies. These deposits present a Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche where accumulations are deepest. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 5/2/96 Strong winds and blizzard conditions on Monday are expected to cause further windslab development primarily on N and NE facing slopes and gullies where avalanches will be likely. The hazard is expected to increase to Considerable (Category 3) during the day. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Some improvement expected, very sparse at present. ICING: Good firm conditions in most easy gully lines. Buttresses are still thin. COMMENT: Difficult mountain conditions expected on Monday. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 4/2/96 A thin covering of snow exists above 300m.Isolated pockets of windslab are present on W to N facing slopes and in sheltered summit gullies. Where windslab overlies snow ice the avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 5/2/96 Very strong winds and heavy snow showers at all levels are forecast this will give blizzard like conditions in the mountains. Greatest accumulation of new snow will be on N through to E facing slopes and all sheltered areas, windslab will form in these areas due to storm force winds. The avalanche hazard will increase to Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow at all levels. ICING: Ice will start to refreeze at all levels. COMMENT: Moving in and around the moutains will be made difficult due the adverse and hostile conditions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 4/2/96 Main snow accumulations exist in W facing gullies on Aonach Mor and in Observatory gully on Ben Nevis. There are some small localised areas of hard slab on W facing gullies above 900m, these deposits are insignificant in quantity. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 5/2/96 A forecast of high amounts of snow at all levels, overnight and on Monday will increase the avalanche hazard. Accumulations will be greatest on slopes with N through E aspects. However storm force winds will cause fresh accumulations of unstable windslab to be localised. Where the fresh slab exists the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Fresh unstable cornices will also be present above N, NE and E aspects. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A dusting of snow exists above 600m. ICING: Ice remaining on paths and streams. COMMENT: Sgurr Finnisg-aig (Nevis Range) ice fall remains in condition. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
