NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 5/2/96 Storm conditions have resulted in the build up of poorly stabilised windslab on steep N to NE facing aspects above 900m where there is a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche. A very weak layer of facetted grains was noted in the snowpack in a few sporadic sheltered locations of N aspects. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 6/2/96 Heavy snow showers and strong S winds are expected to ease during Tuesday but this is unlikely to bring much improvement to the current avalanche hazard. Avalanches are likely on steep NW to NE facing slopes and gullies above 900m. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in those areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Much improved, though there are still large expanses of heather and rock below 900m. ICING: Still generally poor. Buttresses remain thin. COMMENT: Most easy gully lines in Northern Corries complete (but somewhat prone to avalanche........) LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 5/2/96 Snow overnight has formed localised areas of soft slab in areas sheltered from S winds. Most significant accumulations are on N and NE facing slopes above 700m and especially in sheltered gullies. Where this soft slab exists in significant quantities, the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 6/2/96 Further snow is expected overnight and tomorrow accompanied by S to SE winds. Accumulations of soft unstable wind slab will continue to form in sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations will be in gullies and other localised areas on N and NW aspects. Avalanches are likely where this soft snow exists in significant quantities. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations are in sheltered locations. ICING: Ice continuing to form above 200m. COMMENT: Difficult mountain conditions. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 5/2/96 A fresh covering of snow exists above 250m and is lying as deep drifts in places. Greatest accumulation of new snow is on N through to E facing slopes and soft windslab has formed in sheltered areas but more especially gullies. Where windslab has formed on steeper slopes or the new snow overlies the old snow ice the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 6/2/96 Strong winds will bring continuing snow showers above 350m.The greatest accumulation of new snow will be on NW through to E facing slopes and in all sheltered areas. Soft windslab will form in these areas and avalanches are likely where soft slab has formed on many steeper NW to E facing slopes . The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: New snow above 250m. ICING: Ice forming above 500m. COMMENT: Avalanches are likely in Great Gully on Buachaille Etive Mor because of underlying ice. Caution is required in all other places where deep deposits of soft slab exists. Buttresses and ridges are the safer option. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
