NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 6/2/96 Areas of fresh snow have developed which show poor signs of stability. Where these accumulations are greatest primarily on N and NE facing slopes and gullies a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche exists. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 7/2/96 Easing S winds and additional heavy snowfalls will result in further accumulations which will overlie existing instabilities. Where these accumulations are greatest on N and NE facing slopes and gullies avalanches are likely. The avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3) in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Drifting in places but still poor overall. ICING: Remains limited with most buttress lines still thin. COMMENT: Some degree of caution required with route choice ! LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 6/2/96 S winds and snow showers have formed localised areas of soft slab in sheltered gullies and hollows, particularly on NE, N and NW slopes above 700m. Where these accumulations are greatest the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Fresh unstable cornices are also forming, mainly on N slopes. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 7/2/96 Heavy snow showers overnight accompanied by light winds will lead to further accumulations of soft slab on mainly N aspects above 700m, and in locations sheltered from the S wind. Avalanches are likely in these areas where accumulations are greatest. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Soft unstable cornices will continue to form, mainly on N slopes. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 600m continuing to build up. ICING: Water ice overlaid by fresh snow present in many locations. COMMENT: Deep drifts making going difficult in places. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 6/2/96 Fresh snow exists at most levels and has formed deep drifts in places. The greatest accumulation of new snow is on NW through to E facing slopes above 450m and soft windslab has formed in sheltered areas but more especially in gullies. Where windslab has formed on steeper slopes or the new snow overlies water ice the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Cornices have started to form above coire headwalls. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 7/2/96 Light winds will bring continuing snow showers at most levels. The greatest accumulation of new snow will be on NW through to E facing slopes and in all sheltered areas, where layers of soft windslab will continue to form and build. Avalanches are likely where soft slab has formed in gullies, coire headwalls and on many steeper NW to E facing slopes . The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: New snow above 100m. ICING: Ice forming above 450m. COMMENT: Avalanches are likely in Great Gully. Caution is required on steep slopes where deep deposits of soft slab eixst. Buttresses and ridges are the safer option. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
