NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 7/2/96 A little fresh overnight snow has fallen in light variable winds giving small accumulations on most aspects. These fresh deposits show poor stability and fail easily with any shear tests. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) in steep slopes and gullies particularly on NE aspects. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 8/2/96 Further snow showers in light W winds will maintain a localised hazard on N and particularly through to NE facing slopes and gullies. Where these accumulations are greatest the avalanche hazard remains Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A healthy cover of rime exists on plateau areas otherwise cover remains poor and patchy below 850m ICING: Generally slow to develop.Buttresses are OK although still thin. COMMENT: Some easier gully lines becoming well banked out eg Jacob's Ladder LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 7/2/96 Light overnight winds and cold conditions have led to some stabilisation of the existing snowpack. However sheltered gullies and hollows, especially the final slopes of gullies of NW through to E aspects above 900m contain significant accumulations of unstable soft slab. In these locations the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Some fresh, unstable cornices exist mainly on N slopes. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 8/2/96 Continuing cold conditions with light winds will bring little change to the current situation. Where significant accumulations exist avalanches are likely, particularly on the final slopes of gullies of NW through to E aspects above 900m. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Fresh unstable cornices will be present, mainly on N slopes. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow cover to sea level, but thin in many places. ICING: Ice will continue to form at all levels GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 7/2/96 Fresh snow exists at most levels and has formed deep drifts in places. The greatest accumulation of new snow is on NW through to E facing slopes above 450m and soft windslab has formed in sheltered areas but more especially in gullies. Where windslab has formed on steeper slopes or the new snow overlies water ice the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Cornices have started to form above coire headwalls. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 8/2/96 Light winds will bring scattered snow showers at most levels. This is not expected to alter the existing snowpack where the greatest accumulations of snow are on NW through to E facing slopes and in sheltered areas. Layers of soft windslab will continue to form and build in these areas. Avalanches are likely where soft slab has formed in gullies, coire headwalls and on many steeper NW to E facing slopes. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 100m. ICING: Ice forming at all levels. COMMENT: Avalanches are likely in Great Gully.Caution is required on steep slopes where deep deposits of soft slab exist. Buttresses and ridges the safer option. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
