NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 10/2/96 Heavy snow showers and strong SSE winds have led to the rapid build up of poorly stabilised windslab on many steep N aspects above 1000m. High hazard of avalanche in these areas. A slow rise in temperature has brought about some marginal consolidation to the snowpack on some N aspects below 1000m. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 11/2/96 Snow showers on easing winds is expected to lead to the further development of marginally stabilised windslab on NW to N facing slopes and gullies. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Reasonably good cover down to 700m with heavy drifting in places. Wet snow at lower elevations. ICING: No short term improvement expected. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 10/2/96 Strong SE winds and snow have created large areas of unstable windslab. Greatest accumulations are on slopes and gullies with a W, NW and N aspect above 700m. Other sheltered areas are also affected. The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 11/2/96 E to SE winds are expected overnight changing to NW on Sunday. Fresh snowfall is also expected above 600m. Areas of unstable snow will be present on many aspects. Initially, many W, NW and N facing slopes and gullies will be loaded with unstable windslab. Avalanches will occur in these areas. As the NW airflow becomes established, this will start to re-deposit the existing windslab and form areas of hazard on E, SE and S aspects during the course of Sunday. The avalanche hazard will remain High (Category 4). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good snow cover above 500m, mainly on N and W aspects. ICING: Ice will continue to form above 600m. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 10/2/96 There are deep accumulations of of unstable snow on many W through to NE facing slopes and in sheltered gullies and hollows mainly above 700m. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) in these areas. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 11/2/96 Light to moderate sleet or snow will cause no significant change to the condition of the snowpack. Where deeper accumulations of soft slab have formed on W through to NE slopes and in sheltered areas such as gullies avalanches are likely. The avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 300m ICING: Ice above 400m COMMENT: Higher buttresses such as Coire nan Lochan have a cover of mainly soft recent snow and should give some good mixed sport. However avalanches are likely where deeper accumulations of snow exist in gullies and sheltered slopes -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
