GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 11/2/96 Deep soft snow exists in sheltered hollows and gullies on W to NE facing slopes mainly above 700m.Where there is windslab on steeper slopes and wet slab at lower altitudes the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3).Small wet sloughs observed on approach to Aonach Dubh W face. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 12/2/96 Light snow showers will not significantly change the snowpack. Where deeper deposits of windslab lie in steep gullies and headwalls facing W through to NE avalanches are likely. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 400m. ICING: Ice above 400m. COMMENT: Lower level ice climbs being affected by warmer conditions although No.6 Gully and The Screen still attracting attention.Buttress routes such as in Coire nan Lochan well covered.Caution required on approaces and descents. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 12/2/96 Snow showers throughout the day have resulted in some localised fresh accumulations of poorly bonded deposits primarily on SW through to W aspects in steeper locations above 1000m. In these areas a Considerable (Category 3) avalanche hazard exists. Elsewhere some consolidation of recent accumulations has taken place. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 13/2/96 Further snow showers with moderate NE winds will continue to build localised deposits of windslab primarily on S through to SW aspects. This will maintain the current Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A reasonable cover above 550m. Below this thawing conditions exist. ICING: Recent storms have given a plastering of fresh snow on most buttresses. Easy gully lines are in the main well banked out. COMMENT: Fairly complete cover on plateau areas. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 12/2/96 Moderate SE to NE winds have led to the formation of some significant accumulations of windslab on sheltered slopes, particularly on SW to N aspects. Where these accumulations are greatest, the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 13/2/96 Moderate NE winds over the next 24 hours will bring little change to the current situation. Windslab will continue to build up in sheltered locations, particularly S to W aspects above 900m where avalanches are likely. Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow continues to build above 600m. ICING: Ice will continue to build up above 400m. COMMENT: Conditions remain thin on many routes. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 12/2/96 Deep soft snow is lying in pockets above 500m on all aspects due to changeable winds. Low level gullies hold deep wet slab and windslab has accumulated on sheltered ground above 700m. Cornices exist above W facing slopes. Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3). Avalanches activity observed on Aonach Dubh W face. Avalanche accident reported pm at same location. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 13/2/96 Fresh winds will continue to transport soft snow. Further layers of windslab will develop on N through to W facing slopes and any sheltered hollows and gullies above 700m. In these areas avalanches are likely.Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 500m. ICING: Ice above 600m. COMMENT: Buttresses in high corries well covered. Approaches and descents require caution. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
