NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 13/2/96 NE winds accompanied by snow showers have built up localised accumulations of poorly bonded windslab primarily on S to SW facing slopes. In these areas a Considerable (Category 3) hazard exists. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 14/2/96 Similar weather conditions for tomorrow morning will initially result in little change to the current situation. By mid-morning however the winds will veer NW then W becoming stronger accompanied by snow showers. This will result in fresh accumulations of windslab on E and SE facing slopes. This will maintain a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Widespread cover of fresh snow at all levels. ICING: Plastering of fresh snow on most buttresses. Easy gullies are well banked out. Icing on routes starting to build up. COMMENT: Excellent snow cover on plateau. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 13/2/96 Moderate NE winds overnight have increased the accumulation of unstable hard windslab in sheltered gullies and hollows, mainly on SW to N aspects above 900m. In these locations the avalanche hazard is Considerable. (Category 3) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 14/2/96 Cold conditions overnight will lead to little stabilisation of the existing snowpack. Freshening WSW winds tomorrow will lead to some redistribution of existing snow on to NE aspects. Avalanches are likely where areas of hard windslab remain on SW to N aspects above 900m and where soft slab builds up on NE aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Greatest accumulations are on N and W facing slopes. ICING: Thaw at lower levels in the afternoon. COMMENT: Many E facing buttresses heavily rimed. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 13/2/96 Areas of deep windslab exist in sheltered hollows and gullies and on slopes facing NW through to NE mainly above 700m. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) where windslab lies on steep sheltered ground. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 14/2/96 Rising winds will begin to transport snow on to slopes of a more E aspect. Deep windslab will lie in sheltered hollows and gullies on slopes facing NW through to E. On corrie headwalls and summit slopes avalanches are likely. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 500m. ICING: Ice at all levels i.e. paths! COMMENT: Crampons essential. Low level ice routes are still being climbed. Buttresses in high corries are well covered. Approaches and descents require caution. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
