LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 18/2/96 Fresh accumulations of unstable soft windslab are continuing to form on many E and SE aspects above 1000m. Greatest accumulations tend to be in gullies and below ridge lines on these aspects. Where this fresh slab exists, the avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). Unstable cornices exist above E and SE aspects. Avalanche activity observed on E aspects on Aonach Mor. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 19/2/96 Continuing snow showers and a northerly airflow are expected overnight and on Monday. This will redistribute some of the existing soft snow and form new areas of hazard on southerly aspects. Greatest accumulations are expected to be on SE, S and SW aspects. Sheltered areas with a NE and E aspect will also be affected. Avalanches will occur in these locations. The avalanche hazard will remain High (Category 4). Unstable cornices will continue to form and be unstable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Crusty snow on many aspects above 700m, with fresh snow on E aspects. ICING: Snow and ice freezing at most levels on Monday. COMMENT: Unstable snow at the tops of many gullies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 18/2/96 Colder conditions overnight have consolidated the old snowpack with refreezing taking place above 600m. New snow and variable winds in the early part of the day before turning northerly have formed areas of soft windslab in sheltered areas. Greatest accumulations of windslab will be found in gullies and slopes of an E through to S aspect above 700m. Where windslab overlies snow ice the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). These areas are of a localised nature. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 19/2/96 Strong winds and moderate snowfall overnight and during course of day will form more extensive deposits of windslab on most sheltered slopes. The greatest accumulations of new snow will be on S/SW slopes and in sheltered areas such as gullies. Where deeper accumulations have formed avalanches are likely and the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 650. ICING: Mainly above 600m. COMMENT: Lower tempreatures have started to improve the higher routes in north facing coires. Some hostile conditions may prevail. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
