GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 25/2/96 Numerous avalanches have occured today.Frequent snow showers have deposited further layers of windslab onto any sheltered ground mainly facing N to E above 700m.Where deep soft slab lies on steep slopes such as corrie walls and summit gullies the avalanche hazard is High (Category 4) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 26/2/96 More settled weather will prevail although fresh SW winds will continue to transport soft snow onto sheltered N to E slopes. In many sheltered areas deep layered windslab will exist which will be very unstable. On steep corrie walls and summit gullies avalanches are likely.Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 300m. ICING: Ice forming above 500m. COMMENT: Buttresses well plastered, areas such as Great Gully, Easy Gully, top of Curved Ridge,Crowberry Basin, and Broad Gully contain deep unstable snow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 25/2/96 Overnight snowfall on SW to NW winds have created accumulations of poorly stabilised soft windslab on steep NE to SE facing aspects. Wind-transportation of lying snow during daylight hours also resulted in further deposition in these areas. High (Category 4) hazard of avalanche in those specified locations. Avalanche activity observed in Ciste Mhearad late Sunday a.m. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 26/2/96 Moderate SW to WSW winds and a few light snow showers will lead to windslab development on N through to E aspects. Drifting of existing snow onto these aspects will lead to further windslab deposits, giving a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche. Stability will remain marginal in these areas, where avalanches are likely. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good cover above 500m. ICING: Remains fair; fresh snow still plastered onto many buttresses. COMMENT: Fine mountain conditions likely on Monday. Good ski-touring potential and great skiing in the ski area. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 25/2/96 Areas of unstable windslab exist on slopes and gullies with an aspect from NW through to E. Greatest accumulations are at the tops of gullies and below ridge lines. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 26/2/96 A continuing cold SW airflow will have little effect on the existing avalanche hazard. Areas of unstable windslab will be present on slopes and gullies with an aspect from NW through to E. Greatest accumulations will be at the tops of gullies and below ridge lines. Avalanches are likely in these locations. The avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 500m. ICING: Ice continuing to form above 300m. COMMENT: The tops of many gullies are loaded with unstable snow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
