NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 26/2/96 Some localised areas of marginally to poorly stabilised windslab were noted on NE to E aspects above 1000m. Windslab on SE to S facing slopes and gullies shows some marginal consolidation. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche on NE to E facing aspects. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 27/2/96 Some light snow showers on moderate SW through to NW winds may lead to the development of localised patches of soft windslab on high NE to SE facing aspects. Older windslab is expected to show some marginal consolidation. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche wherever new windslab build up is greatest. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Plateau cover nearly complete. Good to reasonable cover down to 500m. ICING: Remains fair. Many buttresses plastered with snow - many mixed routes will require extensive clearing. COMMENT: Blue sky day on Monday. Skiing in the ski area expected to remain good. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 26/2/96 Wind has continued to transport snow and formed further areas of unstable slab, mainly on slopes and gullies with a N, NE and E aspect. Greatest accumulations are at the tops of gullies and below ridge lines. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Cornices are unstable and prone to collapse. Avalanche activity observed on eastern aspects on Aonach Mor. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 27/2/96 Westerly winds are expected, accompanied by light to moderate amounts of new snow. Unstable snow will continue to form, mainly on N, NE and E facing slopes and gullies. SE aspects will also be affected later in the day. Greatest accumulations will be at the tops of gullies and below ridge lines. Avalanches will occur in these locations. The avalanche hazard will increase to High (Category 4). Cornices will be unstable and prone to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 500m. ICING: Ice routes remain thin, with heavy riming at upper altitudes. COMMENT: The tops of many gullies are loaded with unstable snow. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 26/2/96 There are deposits of windslab on N to E facing slopes and in sheltered gullies and hollows mainly above 700m. Where deep soft slab lies on steep slopes such as corrie walls and summit gullies the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 27/2/96 Light snow showers and westerly winds will not significantly alter the condition of the snowpack. Where deeper accumulations of windslab exist mainly on N to E slopes and sheltered gullies the avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3). Avalanches are likely in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 300m ICING: Ice forming above 500m COMMENT: Buttresses and ridges have a cover of recent snow Deep unstable snow on many approach slopes and gullies -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
