AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 28/2/96 Light snow showers and westerly winds will not significantly alter the condition of the snowpack. Where deeper accumulations of windslab exist on N to E slopes and sheltered gullies the Avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3) avalanches are likely in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 300m ICING: Ice forming above 600m COMMENT: Good mixed climbing on ridges and buttresses on recent snow. Deep unstable snow remains in sheltered areas such as gullies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 27/2/96 Large areas of unstable snow are present mainly on N, NE and E aspects. Greatest accumulations exist in gullies and on scarp slopes. The avalanche hazard in High (Category 4). Some large fresh cornices are present, which are unstable. Avalanche activity and cornice collapse observed in gullies in Coire an Lochain, Aonach Mor. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 28/2/96 The cold conditions are expected to continue overnight and tomorrow. The High (Category 4) avalanche hazard will prevail. Areas of unstable snow will still be present, mainly on slopes and gullies with a N, NE and E aspects. Avalanches will occur in these locations. Cornices will remain unstable and prone to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 500m. ICING: Ice routes above 800m will continue to freeze. COMMENT: Unstable snow in many N, NE and E facing gullies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 27/2/96 Windslab on SE to S facing slopes and gullies continues to consolidate. NE to E aspects above 1000m still exhibit some localised instability where windslab is lying on a weak layer of cup crystals.Avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 28/2/96 Isolated snow showers on light SW to W winds will produce little change to the current situation. Localised instabilities on NE to E slopes will persist, maintaining a Moderate (Category 2) avalanche hazard in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good cover from plateau level down to 500m. ICING: Limited build up of ice, many buttresses remain plastered with snow. COMMENT: Cover for skiing remains good.
