NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 28/2/96 Strong SW to NW winds have re-deposited lying snow as unstable windslab on steeply inclined NE to E facing corrie headwalls and gully tops above 900m. Milder temperatures have begun to consolidate the snowpack in locations below this altitude. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in those steep, high NE to E aspects. Recent cornice and avalanche debris noted in Coire Laogh Mor. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 29/2/96 Somewhat milder conditions are expected to bring some marginal stabilisation to the snowpack in most locations. However, light sleety snow showers on moderate NW winds may result in a few patches of windslab on SE aspects where there will be a Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Cover remains good down to 500m. ICING: Limited ice build up; many buttresses remain plastered with snow. COMMENT: Good ski-touring conditions at present. Excellent skiing in the ski area on Weds. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 28/2/96 Large areas of unstable snow are present on mainly on N, NE and E facing slopes and gullies. Greatest accumulations exist in gullies and on scarp slopes above 900m. The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). Avalanche activity observed on east aspects on Carn Mor Dearg. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 29/2/96 A warmer NW airflow will become established over the area, with the freezing level rising to about 900m. Areas of unstable snow will still be present, mainly on slopes and gullies with a N, NE and E aspect. Greatest accumulations will be in gullies and on scarp slopes above 1000m. Avalanches will occur in these locations. The avalanche hazard will remain High (Category 4). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 600m. ICING: Snow and ice will thaw below 900m on Thursday. COMMENT: Unstable snow at the tops of many gullies and on scarp slopes. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 28/2/96 There are deposits of windslab on N to E facing slopes and in sheltered gullies and hollows mainly above 700m. Where deep soft slab lies on steep slopes such as corrie walls and summit gullies, the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 29/2/96 Slightly milder weather will bring very light snow showers above 800m and fresh northwesterly winds. The condition of the snowpack will remain similar above 800m with windslab continuing to form. However below this level thaw conditions are expected. Where deeper accumulations of windslab exist on N through to SE slopes and sheltered gullies the Avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3). Avalanches are likely in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 350m. ICING: Ice may start thawing below 750m. COMMENT: Deep unstable snow remains in sheltered gullies, elsewhere good climbing can be found on buttresses and ridges. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
