NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 1/3/96 The snowpack has stabilised in most locations. Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. Slumped cornices remain over some E to SE and N facing slopes and gullies. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 2/3/96 Milder conditions will prevail. This will not cause much change to the current avalanche conditions in the main climbing areas. Low hazard of avalanche (Category 1). Snow cover at lowest elevations eg Coire Laogh Mor, which is subject to rainfall will become less stable and any cornices will be liable to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Cover of generally wet snow remains fair. Plateau cover complete. ICING: Thawing just below summits. Re-freeze required before any improvement. COMMENT: Skiing remains good becoming heavier at lower elevations. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 1/3/96 The snowpack is generally stable. Below 1000m the snow is moist. Above 1000m a frozen crust exists on top of layers of hard slab. The frozen crust has helped stabilise the snowpack. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 2/3/96 A continuing warm NW airflow will maintain thaw conditions. This will cause the hard slab above 1000m to become weakly Bbonded. There will be a Considerable (Category 3), hazard of avalanche on steep slopes and at the tops of gullies with a N, NE and E aspect. Cornices will be thawing and prone to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Moist snow above 600m. ICING: Ice at all levels continuing to thaw. COMMENT: Hazard of wet cornice collapse above easterly aspects. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 1/3/96 Colder conditions overnight have stabilised much of the snowpack which is developing a surface crust above 850m. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2) in areas such as sheltered gullies and steeper corrie headwalls of a N to E aspect AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 2/3/96 Milder conditions with light rain at all levels will soften and moisten the snowpack. In localised areas such as gullies and steeper N to E slopes where deeper accumulations of old windslab remain, the avalanche hazard will become Considerable (Category 3). Cornices will be unstable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 600m ICING: Ice above 700m COMMENT: Mild conditions but some mixed climbing on higher ridges and buttresses. Hazard of falling ice and rocks -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
