LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 2/3/96 The snowpack is generally stable. Below 1000m the snow is moist. Above 1000m a frozen crust exists on top of layers of hard slab. The frozen crust has helped stabilise the snowpack. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 3/3/96 A continuing warm NW airflow will maintain thaw conditions up to 1300m. The thaw conditions will melt the existing crust and cause snow between 1000m and 1300m, on N, NE and E aspects to become weakly bonded and unstable. Where this snow exists, there will be a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche, especially on steep slopes and at the tops of gullies. Cornices will be thawing and prone to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Moist snow below 1000m. A thin crust exists above this altitude. ICING: Ice at all levels continuing to thaw. COMMENT: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 2/3/96 Colder conditions overnight have stabilised much of the snowpack which is developing a surface crust above 850m. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2) in areas such as sheltered gullies and steeper corrie headwalls of a N to E aspect. Cornices are soft and unstable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 3/3/96 Milder conditions will continue to affect the area this will maintain the soft moist snowpack. In localised areas such as gullies and steeper N to E facing slopes where deeper accumulations of old windslab remain the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) Cornices will be unstable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow above 600m. ICING: Thawing ice above 700m. COMMENT: Higher routes still in reasonable condition. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
