NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 7/3/96 Some late snow flurries on SE winds have created a few patches of thin windslab high on N aspects but these pose only a Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. The snowpack in all other locations is stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 8/3/96 Some patchy snow showers on moderate SE winds may lead to additional localised windslab development high on NW to N-facing corrie headwalls and sheltered gully tops. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche where windslab build up is greatest. The remainder of the snowpack will re-freeze and become hard. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Plateau cover no longer complete but remains generally good. Hard or crusty conditions likely on Friday. ICING: Variable. 'Escalator' on Hell's Lum crag in fair to good condition but many other routes thin in places. Shelter Stone crag and Carn Etchachan look pretty bare. Most gully routes offering good sport at present. COMMENT: Re-freeze expected to bring some improvement to climbing conditions.
