NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 8/3/96 New, localised accumulations of moderately stabilised windslab lie on many sheltered NW to N aspects above 1000m. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche in these areas. The snowpack is re-frozen, hard and stable in all other locations. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 9/3/96 Snow showers on moderate to strong SE winds will lead to the build up of marginally to poorly stabilised windslab on many NW to N facing slopes and gullies. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas where avalanches are likely. The snowpack is expected to be hard and well-stabilised in all other places. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Hard or crusty in locations exposed to the wind. Patchy below 800m but new snow may improve this. ICING: The re-freeze has brought a significant improvement to the ice in the N.Corries bringing many routes into good condition. Popular climbing venues in the Loch Avon basin stripped clean by recent thaw and not yet re-formed. COMMENT: Careful route selection required in avalanche-prone N.Corries. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 8/3/96 The avalanche hazard remains Low (Category 1). The snowpack is stable and consists of old re-frozen snow. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 9/3/96 A forecast of SE winds, accompanied by moderate amounts of fresh snowfall are expected to form areas of avalanche hazard. Fresh unstable windslab will form on slopes above 500m, with a NW and N aspect. Greatest accumulations will form in sheltered gullies. The avalanche hazard is expected to increase to Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Hard snow above 800m. ICING: Snow and ice remaining frozen at all levels. COMMENT: Although climbs in condition include, Zero, Glovers, Comb, and Green gully. Fresh hazard is expected to form at the tops of these climbs. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 8/3/96 Cold conditions have rendered the snowpack firm and stable. All the remaining snow mainly above 700m exists as neve (snow ice). The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 9/3/96 Strong SE winds will bring a dusting of fresh snow to all levels.Isolated pockets of shallow windslab will lie in sheltered hollows and gullies mainly in NW to NE facing corries above 700m.Where soft slab gathers in any depth over steep snow ice the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Hard snow ice above 600m. ICING: Ice reforming at all levels. COMMENT: Crampons essential all snow very hard.50mph gusts over summits and ridges. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
