NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 9/3/96 Localised accumulations of poorly stabilised windslab lie on sheltered N-facing gully tops and corrie headwalls above 1000m. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 10/3/96 Light snow showers on strong SSE winds followed by a rise in temperature may bring about localised instability of recent windslab on N aspects. Considerable (Category 3) Hazard in these areas where avalanches are likely. Falling ice and rock is also possible in thaw conditions. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Some new drifted snow down to 700m. Scoured and icy in wind-exposed locations on Saturday. ICING: Good on Saturday. Thaw on Sunday likely to result in some deterioration. COMMENT: Poor mountain conditions likely on Sunday. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 9/3/96 The old snow remains frozen and stable at all levels. Although there is some fresh snow, it is not of sufficient quantity to affect the avalanche hazard which remains Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 10/3/96 No significant new snow is expected overnight or on Sunday. The snowpack will remain stable. The avalanche hazard will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: General cover remains above 700m. ICING: The snowpack will begin to soften during Sunday. COMMENT: Crampons and Ice-axe essential for all hill users. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 9/3/96 A light covering of fresh snow exists mainly above 400m.Pockets of shallow windslab are lying on sheltered N to NW slopes.Soft slab lying in any depth over old snow ice is weakly bonded. In steep gullies and corrie headwalls where there is deeper windslab the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 10/3/96 Continuing light snow showers followed by a rapid rise in temperature will further weaken the bond between recent windslab and the old snow ice.The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) in localised areas such as steep sheltered gullies and N to NW facing corrie headwalls above 800m. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snowpack mainly above 700m. ICING: Ice above 600m. COMMENT: Snow ice still very firm on Saturday becoming soft during Sunday as freezing level rises to 1370m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
