NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 10/3/96 Cold, generally dry conditions with small fluctuations in temperature have helped consolidate the existing snowpack. Some isolated pockets of windslab do exist at the very top of N facing gullies and corrie headwalls. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2) in these locations. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 11/3/96 On Monday pm moderate snow and strong S winds are likely to result in windslab developing primarily in sheltered N facing aspects by the end of the period. In these locations the avalanche hazard will increase to Considerable (Category 3) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy below 750m. Fair cover remaining in plateau areas. ICING: Reasonable both in quality and quantity. Easy gully lines in firm condition with some small cornices developing on N aspects. COMMENT: Windy mountain conditions later on Monday. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 10/3/96 The old snow remains frozen and stable at all levels. Although there is some fresh snow, it is not of sufficient quantity to effect the avalanche hazard which remains Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 11/3/96 Heavy snow above 700m accompanied by strong SSW winds is expected during Monday. Initially, the snowpack will remain stable, but as the day progresses, areas of unstable snow will begin to form in sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations will be on N and NE aspects, especially at the tops of gullies and on scarp slopes. Avalanches are likely in these areas later in the day. The avalanche hazard will increase to Considerable (Category 3) as the day progresses. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: General cover of old snow above 700m. ICING: Large areas of frozen snow will be present on windblown slopes above 800m. COMMENT: Crampons and ice-axe essential for all hill users. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 10/3/96 The snowpack is generally firm and stable.Pockets of soft slab exist in sheltered hollows and gullies on N to NW slopes above 800m.Deeper windslab overlying old snow ice on steep ground is weakly bonded. In these localised areas the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 11/3/96 Strong SW winds will deposit fresh snow on to sheltered ground during Monday.Further layers of windslab will form, weakly bonded to the old snow ice in hollows and gullies on slopes facing N to NE above 700m.Where deeper windslab lies on steep slopes the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 700m. ICING:Ice above 700m. COMMENT: Old snow ice still very firm. Crampons and axe essential. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
