NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 11/3/96 Fluctuating temperatures have continued to consolidate recent windslab deposits and the snowpack in general. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche. With any rise in temperature above freezing on summits, small cornices which have developed above N facing gullies are becoming less stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 12/3/96 Strong S winds with moderate to heavy snowfall will result in windslab development primarily on N facing gullies and coire headwalls. The avalanche hazard will increase to Considerable (Category 3). Avalanches are likely in the Northerly aspects mentioned above. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Becoming patchy below 700m. Plateau cover remains fair ICING: Reasonable in both quantity and quality. COMMENT: Stormy conditions continuing on Tuesday. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 11/3/96 Rain at all levels has produced a moist and stable snowpack. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 12/3/96 Rain will slowly turn to snow, creating areas of fresh unstable windslab in locations sheltered from the SW winds. Greatest accumulations will be on N, NE and E aspects, notably at the tops of gullies and on scarp slopes. Avalanches are likely in these areas, especially later in the day. As the day progresses, the avalanche hazard will increase to Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow at all levels on Monday. ICING: Ice and snow will re-freeze above 600m during Tuesday. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 11/3/96 Rain at all levels is moistening the snowpack forming areas of wet slab in sheltered gullies and corrie headwalls mainly of a NW to NE aspect. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) in these areas. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 12/3/96 Colder conditions with SW will deposit deep accumulations of new snow on slopes with a N to E aspect and in all sheltered gullies. Avalanches are likely where deep accumulations of windslab form or where old snow underlies. Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 700m ICING: Thawing ice above 700m COMMENT: Climbing conditions generally poor -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
