NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 12/3/96 Strong overnight S winds and moderate to heavy snowfall have resulted in windslab development on N facing gullies and coire headwalls. Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 13/3/96 Strong SE winds and further light snowfall overnight will continue the development of windslab on steep NW to N aspects where avalanches will occur. Avalanche hazard High (Category 4) in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow cover down to 500m with heavy drifting in places. ICING: Existing ice remains; gullies and buttresses covered with fresh snow. COMMENT: Stormy and wintry conditions. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 12/3/96 Areas of localised soft slab have formed in locations sheltered from the southerly winds. Greatest accumulations are on slopes with a NW, N and NE aspect. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 13/3/96 Continuing fresh snowfall and SE winds are expected overnight and on Wednesday. This will further load NW, N and NE facing slopes and gullies above 600m, with unstable windslab. Avalanches are likely in these locations. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Fresh unstable cornices will also form above northerly aspects. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow falling and lying to 500m. ICING: A frozen crust exists at all levels. COMMENT: Ice routes continuing to re-form at all levels on Wednesday. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 12/3/96 A fresh covering of new snow above 500m is lying as deep drifts in places. Greatest accumulation of new snow is on slopes with a W to NE aspect and in in sheltered areas such as gullies. Where deeper accumulations of new snow have formed the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 13/3/96 Strong winds and continuing snowfall will bring accumulations of new snow at all levels, mainly on slopes with a W to N aspect and in other sheltered areas. Windslab will form paricularly on W to N facing slopes and gullies, where avalanches are likely. Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 500m ICING: Ice forming above 800m COMMENT: Avalanches are likely where windslab has formed. A cover of new snow on ridges and buttresses with colder conditions should give improved mixed climbing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE 17.00 HRS NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 12/3/96 Strong overnight S winds and moderate to heavy snowfall have resulted in windslab development on N facing gullies and coire headwalls.
