LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 14/3/96 Areas of unstable windslab are present on aspects sheltered from the southerly winds. These localised accumulations are mainly on NW, N and NE aspects. Where this windslab exists, the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3).On wind scoured slopes, the snowpack consists of old frozen snow which is stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 15/3/96 The cold southerly airflow will persist overnight and on Friday. Snow will continue to drift and form as unstable windslab in many sheltered locations. Localised accumulations will be present, mainly on N and NW aspects. Where this windslab exists, the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Elsewhere, the snowpack will be windscoured and stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: General cover above 700m. ICING: The snow on all windblown slopes will remain frozen. COMMENT: Ice axe and crampons essential for all hill users. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 14/3/96 Storm force SE winds have left many slopes above 900m scoured of unconsolidated snow. However, light to moderate snowfall on these winds has resulted in rapid windslab build up in sheltered N to NW aspects down to 550m, where snow stability is poor. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas. Cornice triggered avalanche observed near Allt Mor burn at 550m. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 15/3/96 Similar weather conditions overnight and during Friday will bring little or no change to the current situation. This will maintain the prevailing Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche on sheltered NW to N facing slopes and gullies where avalanches are likely. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Heavy scouring down to hard snow/ice at higher altitudes with deep drifted snow in sheltered locations at lower elevations. ICING: Cold temperatures are maintaining existing ice in gullies and on buttresses. COMMENT: Storm force winds and deep snow denied access to the N.Corries to all but the most determined on Thursday. Friday looking just as promising! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS THU 14/3/96 There are localised areas of windslab on W to N facing slopes and in sheltered areas such as gullies, otherwise the snowpack is firm and is icy in places. Avalanche hazard Moderate (Category 2) where deeper accumulations of windslab exist. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK FRI 15/3/96 Cold conditions and strong SE winds with light snow will not significantly alter the condition of the snowpack. The avalanche hazard will remain Moderate (Category 2) on W to N facing slopes and shelterted areas where windslab exists, any new deposits are not expected to be great. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 500m ICING: Ice forming on rocks and paths above 200m COMMENT: Ice forming on many routes areas of windslab will require caution. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
