NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 15/3/96 Marginally to poorly stabilised windslab lies on many NW to N facing aspects above 900m. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas. Deep, drifted snow at lower altitudes has begun to consolidate. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 16/3/96 Patchy, light snow showers on strong SE winds will combine to create additional localised windslab deposits high on many gullies and corrie headwalls of a NW to N aspect. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these locations where avalanches are likely. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Deep drifts at lower altitudes. ICING: Cold temperatures continue to maintain existing ice in gullies and on buttresses. COMMENT: Cairngorm stormbound on Friday. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 15/3/96 Areas of unstable hard slab exist on slopes with a NW and N aspect. These areas of unstable slab are localised and restricted to slopes above 900m. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) where this slab exists. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 16/3/96 Localised areas of slab will remain on NW and N aspects. Light snowfall and moderating SE winds will continue to form areas of unstable snow in sheltered locations. Main accumulations will be in gullies and on scarp slopes with a NW aspect. Where this fresh snow exists the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Dusting of fresh snow, lying to 450m. ICING: Cold conditions have formed extensive icy patches on paths and watercourses. COMMENT: Ice-routes have continued to build up, during the last four days of cold weather. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 15/3/96 There are localised areas of windslab on W to N facing slopes and in sheltered areas such as gullies, otherwise the snowpack is firm and is icy in places. Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3) where deeper accumulations of windslab exist. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 16/3/96 Strong SE winds with light snow will not significantly alter the condition of the snowpack. The avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3) on W to N facing slopes and sheltered areas where windslab exists. New deposits are not expected to be great. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 500m ICING: Ice on rocks and paths above 200m COMMENT: Ice forming on many routes. Areas of windslab will require caution. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
