NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 16/3/96 Marginally to poorly stabilised windslab lies on many sheltered NW to N slopes and gullies above 950m. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas. Very strong corrie winds have scoured the approach slopes to some crags in the N.Corries. Avalanche debris noted on NW facing slopes at 1000m. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 17/3/96 Moderate snow showers on strong SE winds will continue to load windslab onto high, sheltered NW to N aspects. The current Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche will be maintained in these locations, where avalanches are likely. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Heavy drifting of snow at approx. 700m and above 950m. All other elevations have been scoured down to hard snow/ice or heather. ICING: Good ice developing on many buttress routes in N.Corries. Mess of Pottage crag in Coire an t-Sneachda looks promising. Some gullies well banked out. COMMENT: Cairngorm stormbound on Saturday. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 16/3/96 Strong SE winds have scoured many areas down to icy snow. However in gullies and hollows sheltered from these winds accumulations of unstable slab are building up. In these locations, generally above 900m and of N to NW aspects the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 17/3/96 Strong SE winds accompanied by moderate snowfall will continue to build up unstable slab in sheltered locations, mainly gullies and hollows above 900m of a N to NW aspect. In these locations avalanches are likely and the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Hard, icy snow on many windblown slopes. ICING: Ice will continue to build at all levels. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 16/3/96 There are localised areas of windslab on W to N facing slopes and in sheltered areas such as gullies, otherwise the snowpack is firm and is icy in places. Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3) where deeper accumulations of windslab exist. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 17/3/96 Strong SE winds with light/moderate snow showers will continue to affect the area, windslab will continue to form and build in all sheltered areas. The avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3) on W to N facing slopes,in gullies and all sheltered hollows where windslab exists. New deposits are not expected too be great. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 500m. ICING: Ice on rocks and paths above 400m. COMMENT: Where deep deposits of windslab exist caution is required. Buttresses are in good condition above 750m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
