LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 17/3/96 Light snow and gale force SE winds have continued the build-up of unstable slab in sheltered gullies and hollows, particularly of N to NW aspects above 800m. Many other slopes have been scoured down to hard icy snow. Where significant quantities of unstable windslab exist the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 18/3/96 Continuing strong SE winds will further build up unstable windslab in localised locations such as the exit slopes of gullies and sheltered hollows, mainly of N to NW aspects above 800m. In these areas avalanches are likely. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Many areas above 600m have been scoured down to hard icy snow. ICING: Ice will continue to build above 400m. COMMENT: Ice axe and crampons essential for all hill users. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 17/3/96 There are localised areas of windslab on W to N facing slopes above 750m and in sheltered areas such as gullies, otherwise the snowpack is firm and is icy in places. The Avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) where deeper accumulations of windslab exist. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 18/3/96 Strong SE winds and light snow showers will continue to affect the area, windslab will continue to form and build in all sheltered areas. The avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3) on W to N facing slopes,in gullies and where windslab exists in other sheltered areas. Cornices have formed on many coire headwalls which are soft and unstable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 450m. ICING: Ice on rocks and paths above 500m. COMMENT: Where deep deposits of windslab exist caution is required, buttresses are in good condition above 750m. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 17/3/96 SE winds and persistent snow showers have led to the rapid build up of marginally to poorly stabilised windslab on sheltered NW to N aspects above 950m. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas. Strong corrie winds continue to scour the approach slopes to many crags in the N.Corries. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 18/3/96 Light snow showers in combination with moderate to strong E to SE winds are expected to maintain the loading of marginally stabilised windslab onto high W to N-facing gully tops and corrie headwalls. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these locations, where avalanches are likely. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Heavy drifting of snow at approx. 700m and above 950m. Many other elevations scoured by strong local winds. ICING: Good ice continues to develop on many buttress routes in N.Corries. Popular gullies banked out but 'slabby' higher up. COMMENT: Cairngorm stormbound again on Sunday. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
