NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 18/3/96 Localised accumulations of poorly stabilised windslab lie high in some NW to N-facing gully tops and corrie headwalls. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these locations. Some marginal consolidation of recent windslab has taken place below 1100m. Sizeable cornice debris noted below Jacob's Ladder in Coire an-t Sneachda. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 19/3/96 Patchy light snowfall on fresh SE winds may result in some further localised deposits of marginally stabilised windslab on NW to N aspects above 1100m. The snowpack below this altitude is expected to show some further consolidation. Cornices likely to remain unstable. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations of drifted snow lie at approx. 700m and above 950m. Most other locations scoured down to hard snow/ice or heather. ICING: Good ice continues to develop on many buttress routes in N.Corries. Popular gullies banked out but a wee bit 'slabby' higher up on Mon. Well worth avoiding the large cornices that overhang some of these gullies. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 18/3/96 Localised areas of unstable slab are present in sheltered gullies and hollows, particularly of N to NW aspects above 800m. Many other slopes have been scoured down to hard icy snow. Where significant quantities of unstable windslab exist the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 19/3/96 Continuing SE winds will further build up unstable windslab in localised locations such as the exit slopes of gullies and in sheltered hollows, mainly of N to NW aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main areas above 600m have been scoured down to icy snow. ICING: Ice will continue to form above 500m. COMMENT: Ice axe and crampons essential for all hill users. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 18/3/96 There are large areas of windslab mainly on W to N facing slopes above 750m and in sheltered gullies. In other places the snowpack is firm and occasionally icy.Where windslab lies on steep ground the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 19/3/96 Fresh SE winds will continue to transport soft snow onto W to N facing slopes and sheltered gullies above 750m.Soft cornices will exist above corrie headwalls.Where deep layered windslab lies in steep gullies and summit slopes the avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow mainly above 500m. ICING: Ice above 500m. COMMENT: Buttress climbs well rimed above 750m. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
