NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 20/3/96 Persistent snow showers on a moderate E wind have loaded (and cross-loaded) aspects from SW through to N with unstable windslab. A Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche exists on slopes and gullies above 1000m at these aspects. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 21/3/96 Further snow flurries on an E wind with no significant change in temperature will continue the development of unstable windslab on SW through to N facing slopes and gullies where avalanches are likely. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good snow cover from the plateau down to 500m. ICING: Reasonable quality ice still remains; buttress routes may offer the best possibilities. COMMENT: Excellent skiing in the ski areas at present. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 20/3/96 Localised areas of slab remain on slopes with a NW and N aspect. These areas of slab are generally small and restricted to sheltered hollows and gullies, above 800m. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 21/3/96 Overnight and on Thursday there will be lttle change to the snowpack. Areas of slab that exist, will remain on sheltered locations, mainly on NW and N aspects above 800m. Where this slab exists the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Mostly old hard snow, above 700m. ICING: Ice remaining above 600m. Gradual thaw as the week-end aproaches. COMMENT: Ice routes climbed today, include Zero Gully, Hadrians Wall and Point Five Gully. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 20/3/96 There are pockets of dry layered windslab in sheltered hollows and gullies mainly above 750m. Larger areas of windslab are localised on slopes of a W aspect. Elsewhere the snowpack is firm and occasionally icy with summit buttresses heavily coated in rime ice. Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 21/3/96 Fresh E winds will bring a dusting of new snow over Wednesday night. Larger areas of windslab will remain localised to sheltered ground on W slopes. Pockets of dry slab will exist in hollows and gullies on slopes facing N to NW above 750m. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 500m. ICING: Ice above 500m.
