NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 22/3/96 Windslab persists on many W through to N facing aspects. Some consolidation of these deposits has taken place but localised accumulations of most recent deposits remain unstable. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 23/3/96 Further light snow flurries on moderate SE winds will add further deposits of windslab on W through to N facing slopes and gullies. This will maintain the current Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas, where avalanches are likely. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Excellent cover of snow down to 550m with some scouring on exposed slopes and drifting in sheltered places. ICING: Conditions remaining cold thereby maintaining reasonable quantity and quality of ice. COMMENT: Some cornice development exist above many N facing gullies. Buttress routes perhaps offering best opry 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 23/3/96 The cold SE airflow will continue, bringing light snow overnight. This will further load sheltered slopes and gullies, with a NW and N aspect, with unstable windslab. Greatest accumulations are expected to be at the tops of gullies. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: General snow cover above 600m. ICING: Ice remaining at all levels. COMMENT: Cold conditions have continued to form ice routes, during the last 10 days. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 22/3/96 Windslab exists mainly on W facing slopes and in localised sheltered hollows and gullies with a N to NW aspect above 750m. Where deep windslab lies in steep gullies the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 23/3/96 Light snow and easterly winds will give deposits of windslab on W to N slopes. These new deposits are not expected to be great. Milder temperatures wiTION: Snow above 550m ICING: Ice above 550m COMMENT: Good mixed climbing conditions on ridges and buttresses but windslab will require caution. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 22/3/96 Windslab persists on many W through to N facing aspects.
