LAST REPORTS OF THE SEASON. THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE USED AND SUPPORTED THE SERVICE THIS WINTER. NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 13/4/96 Strong SE winds and occasional snow showers have combined to lay down localised accumulations of moderately stabilised windslab on steep, sheltered N aspects. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these locations. The upper layers of the snowpack in all other locations are frozen hard and stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 14/4/96 Snow showers late in the period on S to SE winds are expected to lead to further windslab development on NW to N aspects by the end of Sunday. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas. All other aspects are expected to demonstrate good stability. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy snow cover below 850m. Wind-exposed areas scoured and icy. ICING: Reasonable ice to end the season both in gullies and on buttresses. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 13/4/96 Localised deposits of fresh windslab exist in areas sheltered from the prevailing SE airflow. Accumulations are generally confined to N and NW aspects, and tend to be small in area. Where this fresh snow exists, the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Elsewhere the snow is frozen and stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 14/4/96 Snow turning to rain below 1000m during Sunday will have little effect on the existing avalanche hazard. Small accumulations of unstable snow will be present in areas sheltered from the SE winds, greatest accumulations being on N and NW aspects. Where this fresh snow exists, the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Elsewhere the snowpack will remain stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light dusting of snow above 650m. ICING: Old snow is frozen at all levels. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 13/4/96 The old snowpack is firm and stable. There are patches of soft fresh snow above 500m.Sheltered gullies facing N to W contain isolated pockets of windslab which is weakly bonded to the old snow ice.In the localised areas where windslab overlies steep snow ice the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 14/4/96 Sunday afternoon will see sleet showers turn to rain at all levels.Existing patches of windslab will become moist and heavy and where it overlies steep snow ice the soft slab will be very unstable. In localised N to W facing summit gullies the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 500m. ICING: Ice mainly above 800m. COMMENT: Neve (snow ice) conditions in easier summit gullies buttresses well rimed.Sunday p.m. will see a rise in temperatures which will rapidly strip ice and rime, start early! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
