NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 6/1/98 Strong mostly W winds have been eroding recently deposited snow from plateau areas throughout most of the period. Much of this has been re-deposited in sheltered N to E facing gullies. Small spindrift avalanches have been observed throughout the day in these locations. With the arrival of additional snow later in the period some more significant deposits are developing in these locations. Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 7/1/98 Further snow throughout the period with strong S then SW winds will see further windslab development on mostly N to NE aspects. This will increase the avalanche hazard to High (Category 4). With significant new deposits in these locations avalanches will occur. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Some eroding of recent plateau deposits. Reasonable general cover to 500m. Snow still lying in valley floor. ICING: Some ice build up with all gully lines now complete. COMMENT: Some cornice development taking place with worst snow conditions just below gully tops. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 6/1/98 Localised areas of fresh windslab have developed during the afternoon, on Northerly aspects above 600m. Main accumulations are at the tops of gullies with a N aspect. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 7/1/98 High amounts of snow accompanied by strong SW winds are expected overnight and during Wednesday. Areas of unstable windslab will form on N and NE aspects above 800m. Avalanches are likely at the tops of slopes and gullies with a N and NE aspect. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) in these locations. Unstable cornices will continue to form. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow falling to 400m. Main accumulations in N and E facing corries above 700m ICING: Freezing level remaining around 800m on Wednesday. COMMENT: Ice continuing to form on routes. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 6/1/98 New snow is lying above 500m with greatest deposits above 800m in gullies and sheltered hollows with a NW through to NE aspect. Windslab exists on NW through to NE facing slopes and in sheltered areas such as gullies above 850m. Where deeper windslab exists in these areas the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Avalanche debris noted below Summit Gully AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 7/1/98 Strong SW winds with snow /sleet will form fresh unstable accumulations above 850m in sheltered gullies and hollows and slopes with a N to E aspect. Avalanches are likely where deeper accumulations of windslab form on steeper slopes and in areas such as summit gullies. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Unstable cornices will form above 900m on N to E slopes. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 500m. ICING: Ice forming on rocks above 700m. COMMENT: Conditions on ridges and buttresses improving. Windslab will require caution. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 6/1/98 The recent windslab development on E to S facing slopes and gullies is still only moderately to weakly bonded above 750m, especially on steeper slopes and scarps. Avalanche debris noted in Coire Chrid on Sgor Mor. Strong S winds in the afternoon have led to rapid weakly bonded wind slab in N facing corries. The avalanche hazard remains Considerable (Category 3), in these areas. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 7/1/98 Strong SW winds and moderate snow showers will lead to further wind slab build up mainly on N through to SE facing slopes and gullies above 600m. These deposits will be moderately to weakly bonded on steep slopes where avalanches are likely. Cornices will also be unstable. The avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow at all levels has enhanced the skiing greatly, but made walking laborious. ICING: Lean ice conditions now buried under soft snow. COMMENT: A good freeze thaw cycle would improve climbing conditions. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 6/1/98 Light winds and cold overnight temperatures have further consolidated the snowpack. However, unstable windslab remains on sheltered slopes and gullies facing N to E above 750m, in these areas the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 7/1/98 Moderate snowfall overnight and tomorrow on a strong SW wind will deposit fresh accumulations of windslab on sheltered slopes and gullies facing N to E above 750m. Avalanches are likely in these areas. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow line still at 600m, good cover above this. ICING: There is some ice building but it is well buried at the moment. COMMENT: Large areas of hard icy snow exist - crampons and ice-axe essential. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
