AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 12/1/98 Light rain at all levels will lead to further moistening of the snowpack. On steep slopes facing N to E above 900m areas of wet slab will still persist. In these areas the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere the snowpack is generally stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Continuing to thin out. Main cover on N to E facing slopes. ICING: Some areas of thin ice still exist. COMMENT: Falling rocks a real hazard near the cliffs. Easy gully lines complete but very soft and wet. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 11/1/98 The mild conditions have reduced and consolidated the snowpack. Old and generally stable snow exists mainly on NW to NE facing slopes above 800m. Remaining cornices are unstable. In steep summit gullies the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 12/1/98 Continuing warm conditions will create little change in the snowpack. Where deep wet snow lies in steep summit gullies the avalanche hazard will remain Moderate (Category 2). Any remaining cornices will be unstable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 800m. ICING: Thawing ice above 900m. COMMENT: Remaining mild. Care required on ridges in gusty winds. Climbing conditions poor. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 11/1/98 Thaw conditions have stabilised the snowpack. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). Cornices are continuing to thaw and remain unstable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 12/1/98 The freezing level is due to lower to around the summits overnight and on Monday. This will further stabilise the snowpack. Any snowfall expected will be insignificant in quantity to form any new hazard. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Remaining snow in N and E facing corries above 800m. ICING: Ice reforming on the highest summit slopes. COMMENT: Ice axe and crampons essential as icy conditions return to summit slopes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 11/01/98. Mild conditions are thawing the snow pack at all levels, with very little snow remaining. Most deposits are high up in N to E facing corries and are generally well bonded and stable. The avalanche risk is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 12/01/98. Mild conditions will continue to thaw the snowpack at all levels. What snow remains will be wet and generally well bonded. The avalanche risk will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Virtually non existent as thaw continues. Most accumulations in N to E facing corries and slopes above 950m. ICING: Try your Christmas cake! COMMENT: Once again, the Mountain Hare is an easy target. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 11/1/98 Dry, very mild conditions are maintaining a steady thaw of a much depleted snowpack. The largest remaining accumulations lie on steep N to E facing aspects above 950m. A few cornices remain above these locations but most have collapsed or slumped. Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 12/1/98 Slightly cooler conditions with some light, patchy rain or sleet with bring little or no change to present avalanche conditions. Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Little whiteness, much blackness. ICING: Very poor in heavy thaw.
