CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 1/2/98 Light snow on a SW wind has deposited fresh unstable windslab in N to E facing gullies and hollows above 950m. The slab is only moderately bonded to the old snow beneath. In these localised areas the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere the snowpack is well bonded and stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 2/2/98 Occasional light snow showers on strong N to NW winds will deposit further accumulations of windslab in the tops of S to SE facing sheltered gullies and hollows above 950m. Unstable windslab will also remain in similar areas facing N to E. In these locations the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light dusting of new snow above 800m. Patchy old snow above 700m. ICING: Still thin but continuing to build. Some ice routes possible; easy gullies are complete with only the occasional bit of turf required. COMMENT: Today (Sunday) the main areas affected by fresh windslab are gullies and hollows around the top of the Coire Ardair cliffs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 1/1/98 Some new snow has fallen on N to E aspects above 900m. On steeper slopes in gullies and sheltered areas where accumulations overlie existing snow ice and are at their greatest the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 2/2/98 Stronger N winds will redistribute recent snow on to existing snow ice on E aspects above 900m. On steeper slopes of gullies and sheltered areas the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Still sparse with some new snow on older snowpack. Mainly on N to E aspects above 900m. Some unconsolidated snow on buttresses. ICING: Not that much but reasonable quality on routes. COMMENT: Footpaths remain icy. g of fresh snow above 700m. ICING: Freezing at all levels on Monday. COMMENT: Thin climbing conditions prevail. Water ice is present on many footpaths. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN1/2/98 Moderate W winds combined with snow showers have created localised accumulations of unstable slab particulary on E facing slopes. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche. Avalanche activity reported on Hell's Lum. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 2/2/98 Cold N winds combined with snow showers will increase the areas of unstable slab particulary on E to S facing slopes where avalanches are likely. Considerable (Category) 3 hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Thin covering of fresh snow down to 700m. Hard and icy or crusty on windward slopes. Some drifting in sheltered areas. ICING: Still pretty lean. Good snow-ice in gullies. COMMENT: Loose rocks present on various popular routes due to sparse snow conditions. N.Corries very busy! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 1/2/98 Snow above 700m accompanied by SW winds have formed shallow deposits of windslab, mainly at the tops of summit slopes and gullies with NE, and E aspect. This fresh windslab is shallow and localised, where deepest accumulations exist the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 2/2/98 Cold conditions will prevail, with only slight amounts of snow overnight and on Monday. NW winds will redistribute any loose dry snow onto E and SE facing slopes and gullies. These deposits will be shallow and localised, where accumulations are deepest the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). Fresh cornices will re-form above Easterly aspects. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Dusting of fresh snow above 700m. ICING: Freezing at all levels on Monday. COMMENT: Thin climbing conditions prevail. Water ice is present on many footpaths. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS Note wrong date on Report: should read 1/2/98 and 2/2/98 GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 1/2/98 A light dusting of new snow is lying above 700m. SW winds have formed isolated pockets of soft slab in sheltered gullies and hollows, these deposits are generally very thin. Elswhere there is a firm icy crust over stable snow ice. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 2/2/98 Cold dry conditions and strengthening NW winds overnight and on Monday will have little effect on the general condition of the snowpack which will remain firm and stable. Localised pockets of very shallow soft slab will form in sheltered areas. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 700m. ICING: Ice on rocks and paths above 500m. COMMENT: Axe and crampons essential for firm snow and icy paths. Light dusting of new snow on higher ridges and buttresses. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
