NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 2/2/98 Strong N to NW winds and persistent snow showers have brought about the rapid development of marginally to poorly stabilised windslab on most steep, sheltered S to E aspects above 1000m. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these locations. Wind-exposed areas are hard, icy and stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 3/2/98 Further snow showers on W winds will load additional windslab onto E to S aspects where avalanches are likely. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these locations. Cross-loading of windblown snow is also possible at the very tops of some N-facing gullies. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A little better. Drifting in sheltered locations. Thin covering of fresh snow down to valley level. ICING: Generally lean, some rime/ice developing on N-facing buttresses. Good snow/ice in gullies. COMMENT:Loose rocks still present on some routes. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 2/2/98 Fresh snow and W to NW winds have formed localised areas of fresh unstable windslab. This windslab is weakly bonded within the new snow. Areas of hazard are present on sheltered E and SE aspects, notably at the tops of slopes and gullies. In these locations the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 3/2/98 Overnight and on Tuesday, light snow and Westerly winds will continue to form unstable windslab on Easterly aspects. Greatest accumulations will remain on scarp slopes and other sheltered locations above 1000m. In these locations the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Fresh unstable cornices will be present above Easterly aspects. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 700m. ICING: Freezing level rising to 1000m on Tuesday. COMMENT: Thin climbing conditions prevail. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 2/2/98 A light dusting of recent snow is lying above 700m. Westerly winds have formed isolated pockets of soft slab in sheltered gullies and hollows, these deposits are generally thin, elsewhere the snowpack has a firm icy crust. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 3/2/98 Milder conditions with light rain at all levels overnight and on Tuesday will soften and moisten the snowpack. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2) on steeper slopes and gullies during the period of gradual thaw. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 700m. ICING: Ice on rocks and paths above 500m. COMMENT:Climbing conditions will deteriorate with milder conditions. Hazard of falling rocks and ice. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 2/2/98 A stormy day on the hill with very strong NW winds driving falling snow on to E to S aspects. Localised unstable accumulations were beginning to build on the existing snowpack in sheltered areas and gullies of E aspects where cornices were also starting to form. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 3/2/98 A slightly warmer day is expected with the freezing levels around the summit tops and some light rain. In general most of the snowpack will remain stable but on steeper slopes of sheltered areas and gullies on E aspects there will be some unstable deposits. Scarp slopes and cornices where formed will be unstable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Most snow is in N to E facing corries, otherwise patchy. ICING: Generally still lean but of reasonable quality. COMMENT: A slight thaw will improve recent unconsolidated snow on buttresses. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 2/2/98 Fresh snow falling on a strong SW wind last night has caused accumulations of unstable windslab to form on N to E facing slopes above 800m. A change in wind direction to the NW during today, coupled with variable winds in the corrie, has also affected SE aspects. There is a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in the above mentioned areas. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 3/2/98 Although slightly warmer temperatures overnight will help to consolidate the recent accumulations of windslab. Further light snow on a strong W wind during the day will add to the present windslab deposits. Steep, sheltered slopes and gullies of a N through to SE aspect above 900m will be affected. The avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light fresh snow above 600m. Main accumulations above 800m. ICING: Still thin, but improving daily. Most climbs on the Post Face and Inner Coire are being done. COMMENT: Cornices noted above the Inner Coire. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
