NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 6/2/98 Strong SW to WSW winds and snow showers at higher altitudes continue to load windslab on to sheltered NE to E aspects above 1100m. Stability is poor - at best marginal - where slab is building in these locations. Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche in these areas. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 7/2/98 Forecasted snow showers on moderate SW then W winds will load additional new windslab on to steep NE to E aspects above 1050m. Where most recent slab development is greatest there will be a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy with very little below 900m on Friday. ICING: Somewhat colder temps will bring some slight short term improvement. COMMENT: Low quality winter playground at present. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 6/2/98 Areas of fresh wet snow are continuing to form above 1000m. Main accumulations remain on Easterly aspects, notably in gullies and other sheltered locations, where instabilities are present. In these locations the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 7/2/98 Slightly cooler conditions are expected overnight and during Saturday, with fresh snow expected above 900m. The existing unstable wet snow will gradually stabilise at all levels. Fresh areas of unstable windslab will form, with greatest accumulations on Easterly aspects above 1000m, notably at the tops of slopes and gullies. Avalanches are likely in these locations. Fresh unstable cornices will also continue to form. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) in these locations. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow at all levels with greatest accumulations in E facing corries above 1000m. Fresh snow expected above 900m. ICING: Freezing level lowering to around 900m. COMMENT: Climbing conditions should begin to improve with the slightly cooler conditions. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 6/2/98 The snowpack exists mainly on slopes facing NW through to E above 800m. Mild and wet conditions have reduced and begun to consolidate the snowpack. Cornices above NE to SE slopes are unstable. In summit gullies and corrie headwalls the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 7/2/98 The unsettled conditions will bring further sleet and snow showers above 900m. Soft wet slab will build up on N through to E facing corrie headwalls and in sheltered summit gullies. Cornices will remain unstable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow above 800m ICING: Thawing ice on rocks and paths above 850m COMMENT: Poor climbing conditions. Temperatures dropping slightly. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 6/2/98. Very strong SW winds and some snow showers have led to new deposits of wet snow above 950m mainly on N to E aspects. These new deposits are generally well bonded but the layers below this are still showing signs of instability, especially at the tops of E aspects and where exposed to potential high loading from unstable cornices. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 7/2/98. A return to colder conditions with strong SW to W winds and light snow showers above 700m. Further windslab build up on existing, moderately to weakly bonded snow, is expected on N to E facing slopes and gullies. The avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3) on steep slopes in these areas above 900m. Elsewhere the sparse snowpack will be icy. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy, with most deposits in N to E facing corries and sheltered areas above 900m. ICING: Generally lean, with turf mostly frozen. COMMENT: Many paths and open hillsides very icy. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS FRI 6/2/98 Mild and wet conditions have left the remaining snowpack soft and damp. Accumulations of soft, wet slab exist on all aspects with the deepest deposits in sheltered gullies of a N to E aspect above 900m. The wet slab is reasonably well bonded to the underlying snow ice. A Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche exists. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SAT 7/2/98 A return to colder conditions will freeze and consolidate the existing wet slab deposits. However light snow on a strong SW/W wind overnight and on Saturday will form shallow accumulations of windslab on N through to SE aspects above 800m. Deepest deposits will be at the top of sheltered slopes and gullies. A Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche will exist. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy above 800m. ICING: Thin, but should survive this thaw. COMMENT: If you didn't go out today, all you missed was a soaking. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
