LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 15/2/98 The remaining snowpack is continuing to thaw and is generally well bonded. Large glide cracks are present below the NE facing crag of Coire an Lochain, Aonach Mor. There is also evidence of wet snow sluffs and rock fall from steep slopes. The avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 16/2/98 Mild conditions overnight will be replaced by cooler dry weather during Monday. As the freezing level drops, the existing wet snowpack will gradually re-freeze and stabilise. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations remain in N and E facing corries above 1000m. ICING: Freezing level lowering to 800m during Monday. COMMENT: Any remaining snow in the easy gullies is likely to re- freeze during Monday. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 15/2/98 The continuing mild and very wet weather has left a sparse, but stable snowpack on all aspects. The snowpack where it exists is generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 16/2/98 Continuing rain overnight followed by drier and colder conditions will consolidate the snowpack further. This means that there will be little change to the current sparse but stable snow conditions on all aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Very, very patchy above 850m. Even Raeburn's and Easy Gully are now broken. ICING: Virtually non-existent. COMMENT: A colder snap tomorrow but unfortunately no new snow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 15/2/98 Continuing thaw conditions at all levels have further reduced and stabilised the snowpack. Greatest deposits remain high in North to East facing corries and in sheltered summit gullies. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). Remaining cornices are unstable AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 16/2/98 The mild conditions will continue maintaining the snowpack in a soft stable condition. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). Cornices will remain unstable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow above 800m ICING: Very little ice, if any! COMMENT: Climbing conditions poor. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 15/2/98 The mild weather has continued to maintain the snowpack in a soft and sparse condition. Although generally stable on N to E aspects there are some small unstable cornices. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 16/2/98 After some rain Monday will see a gradual drop in the freezing level which will start to re-freeze the remaining snowpack. A possible dusting of snow on the tops may lead to some light unstable accumulations on existing snow ice on E aspects but this will not change the avalanche hazard which will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Very little left with most in N to E corries. ICING: None left! COMMENT: Freezing level due to drop to around 1000m on Monday. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 15/2/98 The sustained thaw has again brought little change to current avalanche conditions. The snow patches that remain are moist but stable and have a Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. However, the largest snowpatches on E to SE aspects have large creep lines and some full-depth avalanche potential. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 16/2/98 Overnight night rain will be followed by progressively drier, somewhat colder conditions on Monday. What remains of the snowpack is expected to become hard and/or crusty by the end of the period. Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Very poor with no immediate improvement expected. ICING: Some slight optimism here. Colder temps. will crisp up what remains, but ice development (short term) will be negligible. COMMENT: The N.Cairngorms is a low quality winter playground at present. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
