NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 17/2/98 An overnight re-freeze followed by a dry spell and steady rise in temperature have brought little change to the stability of what remains of the snowpack. The avalanche hazard remains Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 18/2/98 Very mild weather with light rain will again bring little change to general avalanche conditions. Full-depth avalanche potential remains on steep E to SE aspects during the forecasted very mild, wet weather. However, the overall avalanche hazard remains Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Very patchy indeed. ICING: Remains virtually non-existent. COMMENT: Remaining snow patches receiving heavy use by instructional groups. Steep Grade 1 ground still available for the observant who are willing to undertake a longer walk-in in the N.Corries. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 17/2/98 The remaining snowpack is continuing to thaw and is generally well bonded. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 18/2/98 Mild conditions will prevail through out Wednesday. The snowpack will remain generally stable. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations remain in N and E facing corries above 1000m. ICING: Temperature of +4xc expected on the summits on Wednesday. COMMENT: Limited winter climbing. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 17/2/98 The thaw conditions at all levels continue to reduce and stabilise the snowpack. Deposits remain high in North to East facing corries and in sheltered summit gullies. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 18/2/98 Conditions will remain mild with heavy rain above summits. The snowpack will be soft but stable. Any remaining cornices will be prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet snow above 850m ICING: Very little ice, if any! COMMENT: Winter climbing conditions poor. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 17/2/98 Slight freeze overnight followed by thaw conditions have left the sparse snowpack stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 18/2/98 Continuing mild conditions with some rain will leave the depleting snowpack wet at all levels. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: The depleting snowpack is thawing at all levels. Little snow remains. ICING: None COMMENT: None. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 17/2/98 A brief cold spell overnight has been replaced by mild, wet conditions once again. The sparse snowpack remains soft, well bonded and generally stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 18/2/98 The mild, wet weather is set to continue through tomorrow. There will be little change to the sparse, generally stable snow conditions on all aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Very sparse now. Main patches are at the top of the highest N to E facing slopes and gullies.
