LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 21/2/98 A light dusting of fresh snow exists above 650m. Accumulations are generally small and have had no effect on the snowpack stability which remains good. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 22/2/98 Slightly warmer conditions are expected on Sunday with fresh snow falling above 1200m. The winds are expected to back and become Westerly. New areas of windslab will develop during the day, mainly at the tops of E aspects above 1200m. In these locations the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere any remaining snow will be stable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light dusting of fresh snow above 650m. ICING: Freezing level rising to 1200m during Sunday. COMMENT: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 21/2/98 Colder conditions overnight accompanied by light showers has frozen the snowpack and sprinkled some fresh snow around the hill. The stability of the snow patches remains good. Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 22/2/98 Little change in conditions are expected with the freezing level remaining below the summits. The avalanche hazard will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Cover remains sparse. The snow patches that do remain are now well frozen. ICING: None COMMENT: The overnight frost and snow dusting is too little too late. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 21/2/98 A shallow covering of new snow is lying on all aspects above 700m. On North to East facing corrie headwalls and in sheletered summit gullies fresh snow overlies harder old snow. In these areas the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 22/2/98 A return to warmer conditions will bring rain to the summits. Wet snow overlying old snow in locations such as Broad Gully will for a time become less stable. As the snow becomes saturated it will begin to consolidate and stabilise. On North to East facing corrie headwalls and in summit gullies the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Wet new snow above 700m ICING: Very thin ice thawing above 900m COMMENT: Buttresses white briefly but turf soggy! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 21/2/98 A pleasant day but with no new snow. Colder temperatures kept remaining snow patches firm and well bonded. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 22/1/98 With the freezing level expected to be around the summit tops the remaining snow will stay firm and well bonded. The avalanche hazard will be Low (category 1) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Only patches remain. ICING: Very poor. COMMENT: Freezing level around 1100m. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 21/2/98 Although there has been a very light dusting of new snow above 900m it has made no difference to the very sparse snow conditions. The remaining snowpack is stable on all aspects with the largest areas in deeper gullies of a N to E aspect. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 22/2/98 Some light snow on W winds will cause shallow accumulations of windslab to form at the tops of sheltered slopes and gullies of a NE through to SE aspect above 900m. Due to the current sparse conditions it will only have an affect where it lies on top of old existing snow. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2) in these very localised areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Very, very patchy above 850m. Faint dusting of new snow above 900m.
