LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 1/3/98 Strong Southerly winds and fresh snow have formed new areas of unstable windslab. Greatest accumulations are at the tops of N and NE facing slopes and gullies above 1000m. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 2/3/98 Heavy snow showers accompanied by moderate SW winds are expected overnight and during Monday. Areas of unstable snow will continue to develop in locations sheltered from the SW winds. Greatest accumulations will be on scarp slopes with a N, NE and E aspect. Avalanches are likely in these locations. Unstable snow will also be present in sheltered locations at lower altitudes. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Cornices will also reform and be prone to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow continuing to fall at all levels. Main accumulations drifting onto N and NE aspects. ICING: Freezing at all levels. COMMENT: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 1/2/98 Moderate snowfall on strengthening winds ranging from NW through to S, has deposited unstable windslab on N through to SE facing slopes above 700m. Sheltered gullies and hollows are most affected. In these areas the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 3). On windblown slopes the snowpack is generally hard and stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 2/2/98 Heavy snowfall overnight and during tomorrow on strong W to SW winds will deposit thick accumulations of very unstable windslab on N to SE aspects above 600m. Avalanches will occur in these areas. The hazard of avalanche will be High (Category 4). Very unstable cornices will form above any cliffs or gullies. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light cover at all levels, with deepest accumulations on N to E facing slopes and gullies. ICING: Nothing seen as yet..... COMMENT: .....the path however is very icy. This should be buried under some nice deep snow by tomorrow! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 1/3/9 Areas of fresh windblow deposits have been developing throughout the day primarily on steep N through to E aspects. These deposits are underlaid by softer weaker deposits and exhibited very poor stability from shear tests carried out on this layer. Avalanche hazard Considerable (Category 3) in these steepest locations. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 2/3/98 Mod/heavy snow showers continuing throughout the period, accompanied by moderate W-SW winds and a slight rise in temperature will do little to improve stability. In steepest N to E locations where windslab develops avalanches will occur. The avalanche hazard will increase to High (Category 4) in these specific locations. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: More extensive drifting taking place, overall cover however remains sparse ICING: Much colder conditions with some limited new build-up taking place. COMMENT: A stuttering, stammering, stagger back to winter conditions! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 1/3/98 Prolonged showers are depositing more fresh snow than of late. Sheltered hollows and gullies facing N to E contain more significant quantities of windslab. In gullies above 800m where soft slab overlies old snow ice the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 2/3/98 Continuing heavy snow showers will deposit windslab onto sheltered N to E facing slopes particularly above 800m. Summit gullies will contain some deeper accumulations of unstable snow. Where deep windslab overlies old snow ice the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: New snow above 200m. ICING: Ice forming above 200m. COMMENT: Buttresses looking wintery, turf now quite firm. Caution required on paths, verglas lurks under snow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 1/3/98 Wind distributed snow has added to existing areas of unstable snow on N to E aspects above 950m. Where deposits are at their greatest or overlie older snow ice the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 2/3/97 Continuing cold with more snow showers will leave further unstable accumulations on N to E aspects above 950m. On steep slopes of sheltered areas and gullies new deposits will overlie existing weak layers and avalanches will be likely. Elsewhere snowcover remains thin. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snowcover is generally very thin with deepest accumulations in E gullies. ICING: Starting to build. COMMENT: Unconsolidated snow is covering buttresses. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
