RE-SEND OF CREAG MEAGAIDH REPORT DUE TO ERRORS CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SUN 1/3/98 Moderate snowfall on strengthening winds ranging from NW through to S, has deposited unstable windslab on N through to SE facing slopes above 700m. Sheltered gullies and hollows are most affected. In these areas the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). On windblown slopes the snowpack is generally hard and stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK MON 2/3/98 Heavy snowfall overnight and during tomorrow on strong W to SW winds will deposit deep accumulations of very unstable windslab on N to SE aspects above 600m. Avalanches will occur in these areas. The hazard of avalanche will be High (Category 4). Very unstable cornices will form above any cliffs or gullies. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light cover at all levels, with deepest accumulations on N to E facing slopes and gullies. ICING: Nothing seen as yet..... COMMENT: .....the path however is very icy. This should be buried under some nice deep snow by tomorrow! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 2/3/98 Pockets of windblown snow exist mostly on E to SE aspects. Some cornice formation has developed above steepest gully tops of these aspects and whilst much settlement has taken place, where build up is greatest a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche prevails. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 3/3/98 Further snow showers overnight and on Tuesday with moderate S then W winds will result in some windblown deposits developing on N through to E aspects. In steepest locations where accumulations are greatest this will maintain the current Considerable (Category 3 ) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Some deep drifting has occured in isolated areas. Generally cover remains sparse with many slopes winds scoured. ICING: Still very limited and only a little more than cosmetic for the most part. COMMENT: Staying cold with a look of winter clinging on by the fingernails. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 2/3/98 Strong South West winds and fresh snow have formed new areas of unstable windslab. Accumulations are localised, due to last nights high wind speeds. Areas of both soft and hard slab are present on NE and E facing slopes and gullies above 800m. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 3/3/98 Heavy snow showers accompanied by moderate Westerly winds are expected overnight. Areas of unstable snow will continue to develop in locations sheltered from the West winds. Greatest accumulations will be on slopes with a NE, and E aspect. Avalanches are likely in these locations. As Tuesday progresses the snow will begin to thaw at lower levels this will lead to wet snow instabilities below 900m. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Cornices will continue to form and be prone to collapse. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Dusting of fresh snow at all levels. Main accumulations remain on sheltered NE and E slopes. ICING: Ice continuing to form, although freezing level expected to rise on Tuesday afternoon. COMMENT: GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 2/3/98 Strong winds overnight have scoured SW facing slopes and deposited windslab onto sheltered slopes and gullies with a N to E aspect. In localised summit gullies facing E in particular deep unstable soft slab exists. In these areas the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 3/3/98 Unsettled conditions will bring heavy snow above 800m. Further layers of windslab will accumulate weakly bonded to existing soft slab. Areas of deep unstable snow will build up in N to E facing summit gullies with cornices developing above. In these areas avalanches will be likely. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 400m. ICING: Ice forming above 800m. COMMENT: Low level ice thawing. Buttresses looking wintry, turf firm. Many gullies contain deep soft slab. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 2/3/98 Some snow showers and strong W winds have led to further accumulations on N to E aspects above 950m. Poor stability was found where deposits were are at their greatest. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 3/3/97 Further snow showers will continue overnight and during the day with the freezing level lifting to just beneath the summit tops. On steep slopes of sheltered areas and gullies on N to E aspects avalanches are likely. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snowcover still remains thin with deepest accumulations in E gullies. ICING: Improving with turf mainly frozen. COMMENT: Unconsolidated snow on buttresses will be improved by a 1000m freezing level. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 2/3/98 Deep accumulations of windslab have formed on N through to SE facing slopes above 750m. Due to solar heating and milder temperatures this afternoon the windslab has become reasonably well bonded. Fresh cornices are evident, particularly above SE facing slopes. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 3/3/98 Further heavy snowfalls overnight on a Southerly wind, will form new deposits of windslab on N to E facing slopes above 800m. During the day, a change in wind direction to the W, accompanied by further light snow showers will also affect SE aspects. A Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche will persist with avalanches likely in the above mentioned areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: New snow at all levels. Plateau and ridges are blown clear. ICING: A little is evident, but not enough for climbing yet. COMMENT: Fresh avalanche debris noted in Coire a' Chriochairein and in Coire nan Gall. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
