NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 21/3/98 Melt/Freeze cycles have produced a stable snowpack. Steady thaw conditions prevail throughout the day. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 22/3/98 Little change throughout the period. Freezing levels continue to hover around summits. The avalanche hazard will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Very sparse. ICING: Most gully lines broken although retaining some snow/ice. COMMENT: Spring conditions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 21/3/98 Greatest deposits of snow are to be found in high North to East facing corries and sheltered gullies. The snowpack is in a stable condition. Avalanche hazard Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 22/3/98 Calm and dry with freezing level just above the tops overnight and on Sunday. This will not alter the stability of the snowpack which will remain good. The avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 800m in sheltered locations. ICING: Very little, if any. COMMENT: Winter climbing conditions remain poor and are limited to the higher easier gullies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 21/3/98 The settled dry conditions are having little effect on the existing snowpack. Snowpack stability remains good. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 22/3/98 Slightly cooler and dry conditions are expected overnight and during Sunday. Little change is expected within the snowpack. Snow stability will remain good through out the period. The avalanche hazard will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations will remain in high N and E facing corries. ICING: Freezing level expected to be about 1000m overnight and during Sunday. COMMENT: Existing snow is likely to re-freeze above 900m. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 21/3/98 The prolonged mild conditions have left the snowpack soft but well bonded and stable on all aspects. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). A few cornices are still present at the tops of some steep N and E facing slopes and should be treated with caution. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 22/3/98 It will remain calm, dry and mild so there will be little change to the current conditions. The snowpack will remain soft but very stable on all aspects. Remaining segments of cornices above N to E facing slopes will be suspect in the continuing mild weather. Overall the avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Sparse and patchy. Main areas remaining are at the tops of the highest N to E facing slopes and in gullies and hollows of a similar aspect. ICING: Very, very little and not enough for climbing. COMMENT: No sign of any improvement yet. I think perhaps that Spring has sprung! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 21/3/98 Continuing slight freeze thaw conditions are leaving the sparse snowpack stable. With freezing levels above the tops throughout the day, the remaining snow is moist and soft at all levels. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 22/3/98 Continuing thaw conditions will leave the snow in a moist and soft condition at all levels. The avalanche hazard will remain Low. (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy, with greatest amounts in N to E facing corries. Thawing at all levels ICING: None left worth mentioning!
