Rain with some light isolated snow showers later in the period will not bring any significant change to the current situation. These deposits are not significant or of any great depth. No avalanche hazard category issued. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 17/12/98 A cooler SW airflow will persist with rain at most levels accompanied by strong winds during the day. Light snow shower can be expected during the afternoon. These light snow showers are not expected to alter the current state of the avalanche hazard. No avalanche hazard category issued. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Isolated patches above 920m. ICING: None. COMMENT: Limited winter conditions at present. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 16/12/98 Patchy soft snow exists on most aspects above 850m with deepest accumulations to be found on N aspects above 900m in sheltered hollows and gullies. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 17/12/98 Existing snow will be firmer initially but rain will soon help return it to a softer condition. Later, light new accumulations will build on sheltered NE aspects above 900m where the avalanche hazard will be Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Patchy, with deepest areas on N aspects above 900m. ICING: None. COMMENT: Light snow in PM will fall to 750m. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS WED 16/12/98 The recent mild conditions have left a very sparse snowpack above 900m. Largest accumulations are on N to E facing slopes, particularly in the deeper gullies and hollows. What little snow that is left is soft but very stable. The avalanche hazard is Low (Category 1). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK THU 17/12/98 Continuing mild conditions and heavy rain followed by light snow above 900m, will make little difference to the current sparse and stable remaining snowpack. The avalanche hazard will remain Low (Category 1). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Sparse and patchy above 900m. Even the easiest gullies are only half complete. ICING: Non-existent.
