CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 21/12/98 Very cold mountain conditions mean that there has been no consolidation of existing weak layers found in the snowpack. Localised areas of unstable windslab exist on N through to SE aspects above 800m, especially in the upper sections of the deeper gullies and hollows. A Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche persists in these isolated areas. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 22/12/98 A rise in temperature will aid consolidation of the snowpack. Isolated pockets of windslab will still be found in the deeper gullies and hollows of a N through to SE aspect above 800m. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2) in these localised areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: New snow falling down to 300m. Main cover above 600m. ICING: Thin but unclimable ice forming on most routes. COMMENT: Wintry conditions prevail, long may it last! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 21/12/98 The cold conditions have maintained the localised, poorly bonded deposits on NE through to S facing slopes and sheltered gully areas. Further build up is occurring in the strong SW winds. The Avalanche Hazard in these areas is Moderate (Category 2). Elsewhere only a light cover of snow exists. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 22/12/98 Becoming mild, with freezing levels rising above the tops will strip most snow deposits. Larger accumulations on N to E facing slopes will remain poorly bonded especially where they over lie old snow. The avalanche Hazard in these areas will remain Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light snowfall at all levels, giving not much more than cosmetic cover. ICING: Lean ice conditions, with turf well frozen. COMMENT: Snow subject to thaw at all levels. Oh well.have a jolly ol time anyhow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 21/12/98 Showers have deposited fresh snow above 300m. Further shallow layers of windslab have formed in sheltered gullies above 800m facing N-NE. Where deeper soft slab lies in steep summit gullies the avalanche hazard is Moderate (Category 2). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 22/12/98 Rising temperatures and light rain will moisten and consolidate the snowpack at all levels. Where deeper deposits lie in summit gullies in N facing corries the avalanche hazard will be Moderate (Category 2). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 700m. ICING: Thawing ice above 600m. COMMENT: Climbing conditions limited, snow consolidating overnight and during Tues. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 21/12/98 Localised areas of unstable windslab are present, mainly on scarp slopes and steep gullies above 1000m with a NE or E aspect. During the day, further areas of unstable windslab have formed on N and NE aspects. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Unstable cornices are also present above these aspects. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 22/12/98 Warmer conditions are expected overnight and during Tuesday with the freezing level rising to 1200m. Areas of unstable snow will be present, mainly on scarp slopes and steep gullies above 1000m with a N, NE or E aspect. Avalanches are likely in these locations. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). Existing cornices will remain unstable. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow lying above 600m. ICING: Freezing level rising to 1200m on Tuesday. COMMENT: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 21/12/98 Some light snow showers have brought the look of winter to the hills. However very little depth of snow exists anywhere, with only a small amount accumulating in gully lines and high sheltered areas above 900m. In mainly N to NE facing gullies small unstable pockets of slab have been developing throughout the period giving rise to a very localised Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 22/12/98 Milder conditions overnight and tomorrow will result in a slow thaw. Rapid consolidation of most recent accumulations is expected. This will result in a Low (Category 1) hazard of avalanche. Falling ice may present a hazard in buttress areas where small recent formations have developed. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A dusting of fresh snow down to valley level. Some drifted areas on plateaux. ICING: Rapid build up in certain locations. Remains very limited. Buttresses rimed with only a small amount in main gully lines. COMMENT: Milder conditions returning. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
