GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 26/12/98 New snow is lying above 300m on slopes of all aspects. Stormy conditions are forming areas of weakly bonded windslab in sheltered locations above 800m. Greatest deposits of unstable windslab are forming on slopes with a NW-NE aspect and in all sheltered gullies. The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4) where deeper windslab has formed AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 27/12/98 Heavy falls of new snow and variable winds will continue to form weakly bonded windslab in all sheltered areas above 700m The avalanche hazard will remain High (Category 4). Avalanches will occur in steep sheltered gullies and on slopes where deeper windslab has formed CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 300m ICING: Ice above 800m COMMENT: Strong winds easing during day, areas of windslab in many sheltered slopes and gullies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 26/12/98 Heavy snowfall on very strong variable winds has caused deep accumulations of very unstable soft slab to form on almost every aspect. Deep gullies and hollows hold the deepest deposits. Instabilities can be found even at lower altitudes (down to 500m). The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 27/12/98 Very heavy snow overnight and tomorrow (27/12/98) on storm force variable winds will continue to load the already very unstable soft slab accumulations. These deposits will be encountered on any aspect above 500m. The avalanche hazard will be Very High (Category 5) with avalanches occurring in the above mentioned areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Deep snow at all levels. ICING: Looking good yesterday but it's horribly buried today. COMMENT: "Character building" mountain conditions today. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 26/12/98 Strong winds and heavy snow showers have formed areas of unstable windslab. Main accumulations are present on steep slopes and gullies with a N, NE and E aspect above 900m. In these locations the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). Avalanche activity observed in Easy gully, Aonach Mor. Elsewhere the snow pack is well frozen and stable. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 27/12/98 Strong winds and heavy amounts of snow expected overnight and during Sunday. Areas of unstable windslab will continue to form in sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations will be on all Easterly aspects above 900m, where avalanches will occur. The avalanche hazard will be High (Category 4). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Main accumulations above 900m. Fresh snow down to 300m. ICING: Freezing level expected at 400m. COMMENT: Gales overnight, moderating on Sunday. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 26/12/98 New snow throughout the period has given rise to the development of unstable windslab on mainly steep N to E facing slopes and gullies. Where accumulations are greatest and in all sheltered gullies the avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 27/12/98 Further snow overnight, becoming lighter on Sunday, accompanied by strong mostly W winds throughout will see the continued development of unstable areas of windslab. Avalanche hazard High (Category 4). Avalanches will occur on steep N to E facing slopes and gullies where new slab deposits are greatest. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Heavy drifting down to 500m. ICING: Cold conditions maintaining what limited build up exists. COMMENT: Cairngorm area stormbound on Boxing Day. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS SAT 26/12/98 Snow showers with strong then storm force SE through to W winds is resulting in windslab development on NW through to NE slopes and gullies. These deposits are only moderately to weakly bonded, and where they are greatest a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche exists. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK SUN 27/12/98 Further windslab deposits will develop as snow and storm force winds persist. Winds will vary from WSW to WNW becoming SE during Sunday. Areas of moderately to weakly bonded windslab will exist on NW through to E facing slopes where avalanches are likely. Suspect cornices above these aspects will also form. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow falling above 500m, drifting in strong winds. ICING: The little existing ice now being covered by snow. COMMENT: Winds easing later on Sunday. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
