NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 4/1/99 Storm conditions with heavy snow above 800m and strong S to SW winds led to rapid unstable windslab development on sheltered N to E aspects. Dry slab avalanche triggered on a steep NE-facing slope at 920m in Coire Laogh Mor. High (Category 4) hazard of avalanche in these and similar locations. Some localised scouring noted on a few NW aspects. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 5/1/99 Further snow showers and moderating W winds overnight will lead to new slab development on sheltered NE to E-facing slopes and gullies above 1050m. For a time stability will be poor in these places but some marginal consolidation of the snowpack is expected later during daylight hours. Considerable (Category 3) localised hazard of avalanche in the early part of the period but gradually improving later. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Heavy drifting on Mon. Significant improvement in overall cover in sheltered areas. Fresh, wet snow down to 650m. ICING: Hard to say but likely to be obliterated by fresh snow. Cold enough to preserve previous build up. COMMENT: Cairngorm stormbound on Monday. LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 4/1/99 Strong SW winds overnight and during Monday accompanied by heavy snow showers have deposited large amounts of windslab. This windslab is poorly bonded and shows poor stability. Greatest accumulations are present on N, NE and E aspects above 800m. In these locations the avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 5/1/99 Large areas of unstable snow will continue to form as the strong showery SW-W airflow continues. Greatest accumulations will be present on N, NE and E slopes and gullies above 800m. Avalanches will occur in these locations. The avalanche hazard will be High (Category 4). Unstable cornices will also be present above these aspects. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: General cover above 650m. ICING: Freezing level remaining at around 1100m. COMMENT: Winds moderating on Tuesday. Large amounts of unstable snow in many gullies. GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 4/1/99 Gales and heavy snow showers have deposited deep windslab on N-NE facing corrie headwalls and sheltered summit gullies above 700m. In these areas the snowpack is very unstable. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 5/1/99 Heavy snow overnight will deposit further layers of unstable windslab in sheltered summit gullies and corrie headwalls facing N through to E above 700m. In these areas avalanches will occur. The avalanche hazard will be High (Category 4). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 450m. ICING: Thawing ice above 700m. COMMENT: Thick new snow cover above 700m. SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 4/1/99 Snow showers and gale force SW winds have led to continued windslab build up on N to E facing slopes and sheltered gullies. Although this snow is wet with some consolidation taking place, the snow is only moderately to weakly bonded above 900m. The avalanche hazard on these aspects remains Considerable (Category 3) especially high up on steeper slopes. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 5/1/99 Further deposits of snow will develop on N through to SE slopes and sheltered gully areas above 900m overnight. During Tuesday drier weather, abating winds and freezing levels around the summits some consolidation will take place. However, at the tops of steeper slopes stability will remain poor, where the avalanche hazard will remain Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Fresh snow above 600m, with drifting in storm force winds. ICING: Lean ice conditions buried under soft snow. COMMENT: Calmer conditions with freezing levels around the tops. CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS MON 4/1/99 Persistent snow on very strong Westerly winds has caused deep accumulations of heavy and very unstable windslab to form on NW through to SE aspects above 750m. Fresh debris from two separate avalanches noted on East facing slopes of Sron a Ghoire. The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK TUE 5/1/99 Further heavy snow and very strong Westerly winds overnight, will continue to load the very unstable windslab accumulations found on NW through to SE aspects above 750m. Open slopes as well as gullies and hollows will be affected. The avalanche hazard will remain High (Category 4) with avalanches occurring on the above mentioned aspects. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: New snow falling down to 600m. Deep snow on the tops. ICING: Most likely still there but difficult to tell in today's (4/1/99) atrocious conditions. COMMENT: Giant cornices are evident above the cliffs in the Creag Meagaidh region. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
