CREAG MEAGAIDH AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 5/1/99 A thaw-freeze cycle overnight has helped to bond the existing snowpack. However hard slab still remains on NW through to SE aspects above 650m. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3) in these areas. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 6/1/99 Moderate snowfalls on a E becoming NE wind will deposit shallow accumulations of windslab in sheltered gullies and hollows of a S through to NW aspects above 700m. In these localised areas there will be a Considerable (Category 3) hazard of avalanche. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Light snow falling down to 650m, main cover above 700m. ICING: Probably still there under all the snow. COMMENT: A real pea souper today (5/1/99). Large cornices still above the Inner Coire. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GLENCOE AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 5/1/99 Heavy snow and fluctuating temperatures have left deposits of wet slab with a thin melt freeze crust. Areas of deep wet slab exist above 800m, on steep N-NE corrie headwalls and in summit gullies this is very unstable. The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 6/1/99 The existing snowpack will begin to consolidate overnight. Fresh snow will form areas of shallow windslab in sheltered N- E facing slopes above 800m. Avalanches are likely where deep snow lies on steep corrie headwalls and in summit gullies. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Snow above 700m. ICING: Thawing ice above 750m. COMMENT: Melt freeze crust belies unstable wet slab underneath. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCHABER AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 5/1/99 A thaw freeze cycle overnight has led to an increase in the snowpack stability. Areas of moderately to poorly bonded windslab exist on sheltered steep slopes and gullies above 900m with N, NE, and E aspects. Where this windslab exists in sufficient quantities the avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 6/1/99 Winds and snowfall decreasing overnight and during Wednesday. Cool conditions are expected to consolidate the existing snowpack. Areas of windslab will remain in sheltered locations. Greatest accumulations will be on steep slopes and gullies with N, NE and E aspects above 900m. Where this wind slab exists in sufficient quantities the avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3). CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Good cover above 800m ICING: Freezing level remaining around 1000m. COMMENT: A return to calmer conditions expected for Wednesday. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 5/1/99 Significant consolidation of the snowpack has taken place where most recent storm snow has accumulated. However, a few NE to E aspects are overhung by large cornices and so are exposed to high potential loading. Patches of new, soft windslab were noted high on some NE aspects but these were thin and limited in extent. Moderate (Category 2) hazard of avalanche. AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 6/1/99 Snow and moderate to fresh NE winds right through the period will see new, marginally stable, soft slab development at the top of steep S to W aspects above 1000m. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) but localised in these areas, with avalanches likely. Stability will be good on slopes and gullies of all other aspects not threatened by overhanging cornices. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: Much improved. Plateaux cover very nearly complete. Deep drifts in places with more or less continuous cover down to 700m. ICING: Continues its steady improvement. Ice pitches in some gullies in N.Corries obliterated by snow. Some gullies well banked-out with deep new snow, others are scoured and thinner. Carn Etchachan and Shelter Stone crag plastered with fresh snow. COMMENT: Huge cornice over Jacob's Ladder in Coire an t- Sneachda. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOUTHERN CAIRNGORMS AVALANCHE HAZARD 1500 HRS TUE 5/1/99 Snowfall with light winds have left a light covering on most aspects down to 750m. Areas of poor stability were noted on N to SE aspects above 900m where the new deposits overlie existing snow ice. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). AVALANCHE HAZARD OUTLOOK WED 6/1/99 Further snowfall will leave snow on most aspects above 750m. Greatest instability will be found on N to SE aspects above 900m where accumulations overlie existing areas of snow ice. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable (Category 3) with avalanches likely in these areas. CLIMBING CONDITIONS SNOW DISTRIBUTION: A thin cover from 800m with thicker areas on N to E aspects above 900m. ICING: Probably building but under snow at the moment. COMMENT: Any cornices will be unstable. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
